Costa Mesa Mother's Market to Move Into Soon-To-Be-Vacated Borders Spot

Here's another tip from our friend Craig Medici! In around the Triangle Square area, you might have noticed that Borders is closing. If you didn't, then the signs they put up recently should provide a little bit of a clue.

What's not obvious, however, is what's going to go in its place. This would be Mother's Market, as Craig told me. The Costa Mesa branch of the local grocery store chain will be moving from its current location two blocks away on 17th street to this higher traffic spot by summer.

Bigger spot notwithstanding, methinks that it will still be hard to get to, just like the Borders. I've only once figured out how to get into the bookstore's parking lot from Newport Blvd., and that was by accident. But then, I'm a Costa Mesa noob who is used to the grid-by-grid organization of Irvine and Tustin. What do I know?

Had no idea Mothers wanted to leave 17th street.Sure hope they tear down that monster eye sore in back of current location
that all but took away alley access in rear of center. for us that used it daily we had to go another route which made no sence.
How did city code enforcment ever approve that or for that matter the building in back and storage everywhere was approved at the same time I hear. and you wonder where all the parking went. hmmmmm

Sam in CM says:

That's a horrible location for Mother's Market. It's hard to get to and the parking lot layout sucks. You won't be able to see their sign because of the new freeway sign arch they just put up. Apparently they want to go out of business because I can't imagine a worse decision for them. I bet another health food store will move into their old location and get all of their customers. Such a shame to see such a well loved business make such a bad choice. The only worse choice would have been to leave Costa Mesa entirely.

there is a Mother's Market in Costa Mesa? I always see the Borders exiting the 55.

Eric says:

The Borders location is hard to get into for sure. But it's a bigger space. Best case scenario is that Henry's or Whole Foods goes into the old location & revamps that space to make it nice, fresher & more efficient.

Wm Blackstone says:

Only a downward revision of Mother's absurdly highly priced foodstuffs will make people navigate the silly parking situation at the new location...I doubt that's going to happen.
Say goodbye to Mother's within six months.

Sam in CM says:

They better keep the restaurant. The more they try to compete with Whole Foods or the other big corporations the more they will lose out. They have the perfect niche market but apparently don't realize that. What a shame. Although I don't think they should move at all (or get rid of the restaurant), why didn't they take the old Tower Records location? Or a bunch of other better locations in Costa Mesa? Trader Joe's does a great business West of Newport Blvd.

becky says:

The parking lot entry is only a tiny problem compared to the posted 'no right turn on red' signs at Newport as you leave the lot! The ticket for not noticing is a hefty almost $200! so beware. Otherwise, this sounds like a great move for Mother's because their previous 17th St. location lot is getting more and more congested and I have been avoiding going there because of that. It will be nice to see what they do with the huge Border's space.

george says:

You people who think this is a bad move are crazy... The lot is huge and it is shared with a couple of small businesses and a liquor store - that is like a 2 minute turn around for parking. It is easy to get into - you have 2 option: left turn then right turn, or right turn then right turn. I, for one, really loved having Borders there. I love bookstores. The problem was all of the fools that would use the bookstore as there own personal library. Sitting in the cafe drinking a 2 dollar coffee while reading a 200 dollar stack of books. This happens at all chain bookstores. These people pretend that they are "looking" for a book when they really have no intention of buying... kick them out! TO ALL BOOKSTORES--- please discourage people from bringing products that are no paid for into the cafe. You will see your profits increase.
