Boneheads To Open New Restaurant At Irvine Spectrum

Like anyone who lives in South Orange County, I've been going to Irvine Spectrum like a lemming since it first opened in 1995.

I've got my reasons: The theaters are good for when you want opening night rowdiness and enthusiasm, even if the movie ends up sucking.

But Irvine Spectrum food? That's a different matter entirely. To put it kindly, I usually ate before I came. But much to my surprise, Irvine Spectrum's restaurant selection seems to actually be improving lately.

Fish Market, Ling & Louie's, and FOX Sports Grill are long gone and easily forgotten. In its stead, there's Tea Station*, Izakaya Wasa, and Veggie Grill. And soon, there will be Boneheads, a chain from the South that currently only has one outlet in O.C., a few exits south in Lake Forest.

On a review of the Lake Forest branch, I wrote that the fire-roasted chicken "is moist to the bone, even the breast; and every inch of its rendered skin glistens with a thin veneer of that red piri-piri glaze--a liquid which can also double as Mace."

Now if only George Lucas and Steven Spielberg can put out a decent blockbuster.....

*Chococakeluvr has updated me that Tea Station is also gone. :-(

Boneheads in Lake Forest is one of my favorite places to eat. Yet, the Spectrum is one of my least favorites places to visit ... and I work within 1/2 mile of there. It's such a zoo. Nevertheless, I hope that the clientele there appreciates the new Boneheads, and that it does well.

I believe Tea Station is no longer there, their location was replaced by Panda Express.

For me, it's equal, time-wise, to visit either one on my lunch hour. I love the LF location, I really enjoyed their stuff. Glad to see they're doing well.

And I just tried Veggie Grill last week and LOVED it. Going again today, in 15 minutes actually, to meet my best Yelp bud there for lunch. Sweet potato fries here I come. :D

Chick 3,

I hope so too. But judging by what Chococakeluvr said about Tea Station, perhaps people who go to Irvine Spectrum are resigned to the fact that there are no good eats there and eat before hand. Let's hope they realize Boneheads is somethin' special. And let's hope Boneheads doesn't screw this up.

Chococakeluvr,

Thanks for the update! You're right! They're gone! Bummer. Though I must admit, I usually go to the Culver Tea Station to save a few cents.

Melissa,

Though the Boneheads in Irvine Spectrum is still a bit far for my lunchhour (I work in Santa Ana) near South Coast Plaza, it's still a good northward trend. Maybe Boneheads will think about opening up one at SCP next...HINT HINT.

I love Boneheads in Lake Forest! My kids would never eat fish till I took them to Boneheads for the Tilapia. I hope Boneheads is successful in Irvine and they continue to grow in South OC.
