Ferdussi Out; La Terraza In

la_terraza.jpgYet another restaurant slips into history while another begins to write its own. Ferdussi Taste of Persia -- the Santa Ana institution that proudly wore its Best of OC badge from OC Weekly on its door -- closed a few months ago. Now open in its place, is a new Mexican place called La Terraza.

I haven't tried La Terraza, but I will miss Ferdussi.

One interesting tidbit: The OC Weekly sticker is still there.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Ferdussi was the best Persian restaurant in OC, by far. Fuck, fuck, FUCK.

OHMYGOD! NOOOOOOOO!!!! Ferdussi was one of my favorite restaurants of any type. The problem was location, location, location: when thinking of a place to eat, you brain starts scanning the boulevards hoping one particular place will jump out and jog your memory. Because Ferdussi was tucked around the backside of a strip center, one often did not remember it. A real, real shame.

One political memory: shortly after Sept. 11, about seven members of my family went to Ferdussi for dinner. The seniors in a group were confused? "We're going to a Persian restaurants at a time like this?" (To them, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan--all the same; invade 'em all!) We walked into the place at the height of the dinner hour and there was no one inside except staff. Our favorite waiter there (wish I could recall his name) was confused? "These white folks are coming to a Persian restaurant at a time like this?"

Well, to say we got top-notch service would be an understatement. Sensing that the seniors in our group were having trouble wrapping their heads around the menu, the waiter suggested leaving everything up to him and he'd bring out a variety of dishes. Which he did, and it was one of the most enjoyable, care-free and delicious meal any of us ever had. In fact, it left such a lasting impression that I was planning to take the brood to Ferdussi right after the U.S. invades Iran.

One final thing about location: my wife and I had a quick lunch there one day and our favorite waiter (again, wish I could recall his name) gave us a coupon for what was going to be their new location in the Bristol/Red Hill area. Edwin, Gustavo: Any idea what happened to those plans? This was probably 3-4 years ago.

  5. Edwin Goei says:

    Matt,

We used to take clients here all the time. It was always a hit. And that lunch buffet is darned bargain at $10!

I wish I knew where they went. I've been doing some digging on all the food sites I can think of, but so far, they seemed to have vanished like the proverbial fart in the wind.

Their website is still up though. But calls to the number on it goes nowhere.

La Terraza sucks in more ways than one, let me explain. Taco Tuesday Right! They advertise $2 Taco Tuesday, the menu says $2 Taco Tuesday. We get the bill for 15 tacos and 4 soft drinks the total comes to $62. The waitress explains that Taco Tuesday is not a lunchtime deal and only applies to happy hour. That stipulation was not addressed at time of ordering or on the menu. With a insincere “Sorry” we were out of there, vowing never to return. The tacos were mediocre at best. The place was totally empty at noon on a Tuesday. I predict they will be closing up shop early 2009. Long live Ferdussi.
