Innocent snack, or political shibboleth?

Quick, what's your favorite Girl Scout cookie? Okay, now what's your favorite Girl Scout cookie besides Thin Mints? Is it Samoas (or Caramel De-Lites)?

You pinko.

According to a survey done by hunch.com, what you like to eat may be correlated to your political feelings. According to their survey, people who identify themselves as "liberal" tend to prefer Samoas; conservatives prefer Trefoils.

Now, whether it's actually a scientific survey (it's not) is not the point; it's still hugely entertaining and, in some cases, pretty obvious: Liberals prefer vegetable toppings on their pizza, conservatives meat. When asked what they would cook at home, conservatives preferred comfort foods such as meatloaf and tuna-noodle hotdish; liberals identified foods such as coconut lamb curry.

None of this should come as a surprise; Gustavo reported in this very space back in May that anti-immigration activist Barbara Coe told her followers never to eat in restaurants where the staff can't speak English, which pretty much limits you to American-food chains.

Fear not, however, Obama-nauts; there is some common ground. Both groups prefer natural corks in their wine bottles; slightly less than half of each group prefers salted rims on a margarita glass;

Take some time to study these things; you never know, you may be judged by the lettuce you serve in your salad at that dinner party (choose nice green romaine; arugula is too blue and iceberg is too red).

DanGarion says:

So that fact that I grew up a conservative that liked Samoas and then became a liberal Libertarian is because of the cookie I like?

that article is totally discriminatory. it's as if it's trying to say that conservatives are somehow closed minded to foods and it's only liberals who know anything about food. Well it just so happens that I'm a slightly right leaning foodie myself who loves both a meatloaf and a lamb curry.

It also neglects huge cultural trends like how the huge Vietnamese population here in Orange County tend to be more conservative leaning but Vietnamese do love food.

Also, try not to lump all conservatives into that bigoted Barbara Coe's group.

Where's the food? says:

Lack of material from local foodies this week? More food less politics pluueeeaase!!! I don't need to or want to read about Obama or Rick Warren in this section ever. This is the time of year where food is celebrated and cultural traditions are rich...and this is the best you guys can do? Very dissapointed this week.

food and politics go hand in hand. maybe not bifurcated as the survey claims (red/blue) though.

why do you think corn, soy and wheat are the U.S.'s biggest crops? It isn't because they're cheap and easy to grow.

separating politics and food would be like separating food and culture or food and identity or food and cooking or food and agriculture.

this is a food blog. not an advertisement for local restaurants. not a recipe generator. a place that covers all aspects of food. this type of post is exactly where it should be (even though I too think the linked survey is pretty flawed and useless... a lot of the "differences" are very minor and a lot of questions are vague).
