News Flash: The Line at Halal Guys is Long

Categories: Really?!?!?

So close but so far away.
As I entered the parking lot on Halal Guys opening day, I knew the line would be long, but not this long. The queue of bodies literally wrapped around the building. I hadn't seen anything like it since Din Tai Fung opened in South Coast Plaza and the early days of Kogi. Unlike DTF and Kogi, I did not stand in it. Instead I circled back around and left.

Later, I read on Facebook and Twitter reports of a 4-hour wait that day, and that they eventually had to cut off people from waiting around 7 p.m., so that they could still close at their regular time at 11 p.m.

Downtown Santa Ana Boosters Post IG Photo Of Mongols Biker Gang Ring-Wearer Enjoying Fries

Mongols as gentrifiers?
All signs seemed pointed to Downtown SanTana (or DTSA, as the hipsters call it) moving further upscale on the gentrification ladder. Artists courted to give the area its brand got the boot. Hell, folks can't even get a chicken waldorf at the Gypsy Den anymore. But all that conventional wisdom went out the window when Downtown Inc., the entity in charge of promoting the area, embarrassingly reposted a photo on Instagram showing someone wearing Mongols Nation rings enjoying some fries at the 4th Street Market.

Biker gangs boosted by DTSA as gentrifiers? HA!

How South Central's Notorious "Grim Sleeper" Serial Killer Got Caught Eating Pizza in Buena Park!

Categories: Really?!?!?

Gabriel San Roman / OC Weekly
Lonnie Franklin Jr. might still be on his South Central Los Angeles killing spree if not for an unfinished slice of pizza in Buena Park. Dubbed the "Grim Sleeper," Franklin stands accused of ten murders--mostly black women--and another attempted slaying stretching all the way back to 1985.

The Grim Sleeper avoided arrest, an easy feat given law enforcement's lackluster interest in the case. But when activists turned up the pressure five years ago, it led police to John's Incredible Pizza Co. at the Buena Park Mall.

Two Women Charged With Trying to Pass Fake $100 Bills in Irvine's Chipotle, Pick Up Stix, Round Table

Categories: Really?!?!?

Is this worth passing off fake $100 for? Don't answer, Ben Dayhoe...

I do not condone counterfeiting, but if I were to try and pass off fake bills, I would not try to do it all in one day. I would not hit up so-so restaurants like Chipotle, Pick Up Stix, and Round Table Pizza. And I would definitely not try to do it in Irvine, a city where crime is so low that police officers would rather just harass poor people and Mexicans trying to play in city parks.

In short, I would not do what Niresha Collins and Tawny Chandler are accused of doing.

Naugles Comeback Even Closer to Reality Thanks to Key Trademark Ruling

Naugles bean-and-cheese

Naugles--the legendary Mexican fast-food chain that for Southern Californians who grew up in the 1980s was their manna--is one step closer to returning thanks to a ruling by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

See, all those Naugles pop-up restaurants we wrote about were NOT endorsed by Del Taco, the company that bought out Naugles in the 1980s and technically had the copyright to the Naugles brand. Challenging their trademark with those restaurants was Christian Ziebarth, one of the first food bloggers in OC, and a Naugles fanatic. How fanatical? He challenged Del Taco's hold on Naugles copyright, arguing the fast-food giant let it lapse. And...Ziebarth won, meaning a Naugles comeback is closer than ever.

Elie Ayrouth Is Mr. Foodbeast, Head of the Craziest Food Website Around

Ask him about his boxers...

One day in 2010, Elie Ayrouth received a tweet with a location. A reader of his website had located the thing he'd been searching for: Carl's Jr.'s footlong cheeseburger. Rumors about the mystical monstrosity had existed on the Internet for years, and Ayrouth wanted to find out for his fans whether it was true. Armed with a camera and notepad, he rushed to the restaurant address in Santa Ana, ordered the item, and then marveled as it landed on his plastic tray. The burger wasn't very good, but the quest solidified what Ayrouth's humble site, Foodbeast, was becoming--a go-to source for all things new and share-worthy in the foodie universe.

First the car, now the sign!
A couple and a parking service are apparently at odds over who is responsible for the company's valet giving the pair's 2014 Mazda CX-9 to a stranger with no ticket outside the Joe's Crab Shack entrance in Newport Beach.

The beginning of the madness...

Check out our photo slideshow of the Natural Producs Expo West 2015 here!

If traffic was a little crazier than usual in your commute through Anaheim over the weekend, it's because it was about that time of the year again when the city becomes the world's epicenter for health foods. The 34th annual Natural Products Expo West took place at the Anaheim Convention Center, and it was as crowded and congested as ever--Around 67,041 out-of-town registered attendees, to be exact. This year's event was bigger than last year, and at least twice the size of the year before that--and there's no sign of it slowing down.

Ramen Eggs Benedict Debuts in Orange County!

Categories: Really?!?!?

Ramen burgers? So 2013. This year is all about the ramen eggs benedict, the brainchild of Japanese noodle house Oudon in Fountain Valley. It sold out the first day--CRAZY!!!

You could probably envision it already: a bed of ramen buns (in place of English muffins) with traditional poached eggs and hollandaise sauce on top. But expect more Japanese elements: seaweed, lime, red ginger, and green onions are free topping options, and for additional charge, you can add chashu (pork), lamp fish caviar, fried garlic and onions, truffle salt, and a choice of spicy or teriyaki sauce. Interesting...
