California Shabu Shabu Opens in Costa Mesa After Almost A Year of Delays

Those who dream of opening a restaurant need to read this blog written by a guy named Len. It chronicles the trials and tribulations (mostly tribulations) of opening a shabu shabu restaurant.

Among the other indignities suffered, they were mistaken for robbers by Costa Mesa police while doing some repair work on the roof of their restaurant. With guns drawn, they were handcuffed and made to sit on the sidewalk until the whole misunderstanding was resolved.

Since that time, they got saddled with other problems. But the posts eerily stopped in February.

Then this month; a flurry of updates. Turns out their contractor, a character they dubbed "The Ogre", abandoned them around March, leaving the project stillborn.

Recently, a new one came to the rescue and voila, a year after they started, their shabu shabu restaurant, called California Shabu Shabu, is finally open!

This means their blog is effectively done.  I'll miss the excruciatingly funny entries, but I bet they won't.

I remember that blog. I remember reading about the police incident. Have no idea what led me there though and I had forgotten all about it.

Hope the food is good and that they succeed, given all the obstacles they conquered.

I guess I never understood the appeal of Shabu Shabu. Boiling meat and vegetables.Whats the best way to remove flavor from things? Hmmmm.

And its not very filling, and the ingredients are pretty ordinary. Yet people go.

I think someone should open a Tempura bar. Now that would be good!

The owners seem like great guys though with a great sense of humor and I hope they do well.

Edwin Goei says:

Melissa,

HA! I think it might have been me who led you there. I wrote about the existence of the blog in January.

DD,

That's mighty gracious of you -- I mean that! Since I know you, I know that a Diamond Dog praise is worth ten from anyone else!

But it's true. You're not the only one who aren't particularly fond of this way of cooking. My own family members are divided on the issue. One side prefers Korean BBQ. The other Shabu Shabu. The point is the same, to cook and have fun...but the shabu shabu side would argue that it is less messy, less smoky and somewhat healthier, lighter. The Korean BBQ (yakiniku, etc.) side would argue that it has more flavor.

I like both!

By the way, there IS a tempura bar. It's in Little Tokyo though. I look forward to the day one opens here.

yes saying you hope the food is good is like saying i hope they buy fresh meats and ingredients and have good refrigeration and hot pots, because you do all the other work.
