In The Battle Of The Beans, Starbucks Should Be Worried

Categories: Really?!?!?
Just as the new ads for Starbucks are lazy, the ones for McDonald's new coffees are horrendously grating, not to mention lowbrow. "McCafé Your Day" is bad enough, but how about "A Better Day is Possiblé"? Huh?. Or  "It's All About The Accent Mark"? Accent mark???.

So I naturally assumed that the drinks would be awful too. After all, the worse the ad, the worse the food, right? (Note: this doesn't always work in reverse--Denny's and Jack In The Box sometimes create brilliant ads, but I'd hardly call their grub wonderful).

But it's not really fair to criticize without trying them, so, rather than make do with a drive-thru, I headed down to a genuine, full-fat McCafé yesterday (CLICK HERE to find your nearest).

IMG_0442.jpg
The verdict? Although totally indistinguishable from one another (see photo), the latte and cappuccino were not bad. Not bad at all.

Notice I didn't say good--I can't bring myself to. They were... surprisingly pleasant? They were creamy, with the right amount of foam on top, and, shock horror, you could actually taste the coffee.

True, I did burn my mouth on the first sip as they were way too hot.

True, I hadn't realized I needed to ask for sugar when I ordered the drinks, although it's surely better to make it straight and then allow the customer to add their own?.

And, true, for an overall "experience", surrounded by screaming kids and shopping carts in a megastore, it was hardly romantic or even relaxing, and not exactly in keeping with the faux "French chic" slant of the ads.

But, still, it exceeded my expectations, and not just in terms of price ($2.79 for a medium/16oz latte, nearly 50 cents less than the equivalent at Starbucks).

And that's the point. While the likes of Peet's and Kéan, in a league of their own, don't have any reason to start quaking in their boots, Starbucks does. It may be trying valiantly to hang on to loyal customers by proclaiming "Beware Of A Cheaper Cup Of Coffee", and slashing the cost of the odd drink here and there (its grande iced coffee recently dropped to $1.95), it has ignored the question of taste. Of course, people want to pay less, but there's more to the equation: if a competitor's product is cheaper and as good as their current one, they'll make the switch.

Don't believe me? Try it for yourself. For nothing: some McCafés are still handing out free samples. At the one inside the Wal-Mart in Santa Ana (3600 W. McFadden Ave.), it's from noon till 2pm this coming Friday (May 15).

I don't understand your conclusion ("Starbucks has ignored the question of taste"). Per your comments: McD's cappuccino and latte were too hot, not distinguishable from one another, and you couldn't bring yourself to say either was "good". Also, the store environment was loud and not relaxing. Now then... compared to Starbucks...? Where's the comparison?

Short of a comparison... If a cappuccino and latte at Starbucks do taste good, are served at a correct temp (unlike McD's, Starbucks steams the milk per order with a thermometer in the pitcher), distinguishable from one another (hand poured to recipe), and served in an otherwise pleasant environment... Maybe they haven't ignored the question of taste at all (or quality and store environment for that matter).

I think you made the case to continue going to Starbucks. I have a better idea now of why there is a price difference.

Yes, they were too hot, but next time I'll know to wait a bit longer before tasting. Yes, they were indistinguishable from one another, but that doesn't mean either was bad (I generally drink just lattes, so the fact that they were very similar was worth noting but didn't impair the taste of the drink).

In my experience, many Starbucks' locations are loud and not relaxing. And they don't know how to make coffee—they may use their thermometers and pour each one by hand, but they still taste like crap. In fact, they taste of nothing. They're like hot milk. I've had maybe two good lattes at Starbucks in the last year, based on one or two a week.

People who are in love with Starbucks might well carry on going there, but those who are on the fence and/or don't have a Peet's or Kéan or other local, really good coffee shop (like me) might well turn to McD's in future.

(And I couldn't bring myself to say the coffee was good as generally I'm not a fan of McDonald's and their policies. But, as I say, I was pleasantly surprised by the coffees).

Personally, I cannot stand the flavor of Starbucks. In this economy, it is not just out of principle nor flavor that I avoid Starbucks like the plague, but also my wallet. If I were DYING for a caffeine fix and a Starbucks & a McD's were anywhere within the given vicinity, McD's would win hands down.

Re: the accent. I assumed McD's was targeting a broader cultural/linguistic audience in their advertising by using the accent to connect to Spanish speakers. Crazy me.

I've never been a fan of Starbucks, either, due to their general policies (ie effectively kicking local cafes out of their own neighborhoods) and their crap coffee (no flavor at all), so I agree with you on that. NOT that McD's policies are much better!

About the accent, I think it's meant to be French rather than Spanish, but point taken about it widening the demographic (although, as I wrote that I laughed because, really, would any self-respecting French person be caught dead ordering coffee at McDonald's?!)

I've read that since Starbucks rapid expansion, local cafes have increased - not decreased. You can research this. There are mom and pop shops that credit Starbucks for getting more people interested in better quality coffee, espresso drinks, etc. Heck - I bet McD's would give Starbucks the same credit. It's prompted them to get in the game.

What's the agenda against Starbucks? You guys would choose McD's "hands down"?! All Starbucks are crap and serve crap - truly? All stores and all employees? That's a broad comment. Saving .50 cents is worth going to a greasy burger joint for a marginal product (you want fries with that latte?). And "not that McD's policies are much better"? They're NOT better at all! Read Starbucks annual report on what they give back to local communities and coffee origin countries and farmers. Then go rent "Super Size Me" or "Fast Food Nation" for a look at McD's practices and reputation. Are you serious?

Never mind me - are you serious?! How on earth would I know if every employee in every Starbucks in the entire world serves a good or bad cup of coffee? I'm basing it on personal experience. I'm still trying to find good coffee shops - there simply aren't that many where I live, and that's Costa Mesa! The best, in my experience, are Peet's and Kean, but neither of those is within easy reach.

I wouldn't choose to go out of my way for McDonald's, whether for coffee or food, I was simply trying out their new coffee to see if it was any good. I was pleasantly surprised, but that doesn't mean it was the best coffee I've ever had - not by any stretch of the imagination!!

Broadly, I don't like McDonald's or its policies, (yes, I've seen those films), but I also don't like the fact that Starbucks put many local coffee shops out of business (that is a fact!).

I wasn't expecting much but I ended up really liking their coffee line. I don't eat fastfood but I've stopped by a few times already just for the coffee.

Ditto - I was pleasantly surprised too. Can't say I'll go out of my way for it, but if I'm in the area I will...
