Cafe Rio in Lake Forest Not Open Yet...But There's a Sign

Among all the posts that I've written here this year, none have gotten more comments and curiosity than the one where I announced that the Utah-based chain Cafe Rio was opening its first California outlet in Lake Forest.

Nevermind that there's already excellent Mexican all over our fine county -- people seem to want this place to open, and to open quick.

In any case, the announcement that they were coming our way was back in May. And what of its progress? Better than a few months ago.

Up until now, there wasn't even a sign to indicate where the place was going to end up. Now there's at least a banner and a chain-link fence around the storefront, which used to be a computer store.

Since it'll be a few more few weeks (maybe months?) continue to frequent all great joints we're already blessed with.

In other news, a Panda Express will be opening its doors soon on mainland China.

Of course I jest. But, its about as insane as a Utah company presenting Mexican food to Southern California ... yay?

Harlowe Thrombey says:

This is another reason for Lake Forest politicians to chill out in the worries about pot dispensaries.

They wanted a conservative, business-friendly city, and they created one. Now that a business moves into the city that they don't like, suddenly they want regulations.
Hypocrites.

Let the pot dispensaries be. This will create much business for all these great restaurants in Lake Forest.

I asked someone in Utah what the best Mexican restaurant around was and they said Cafe Rio. You're right, Utah knows nothing about Mexican food. It's not bad, it's just not Mexican food.

If it's not Mexican food what is it? I've eaten at Cafe Rio and it's more Mexican than anything else. I'll forego the usual "authenticity" lecture.

On visits to Utah I've actually been to a number of Mexican restaurants and have had some good stuff and some not-so-good stuff. Cafe Rio is fine but I still don't get the utter fixation Utahns have on it. It's very similar to the cult of Chipotle that we have here.

Christian-

I can't speak for Utahns, but I CAN speak for my fellow Nevadans about Cafe Rio. Basically, it's one of the few truly decent Mexican places in Las Vegas... Especially off The Strip. I'm still surprised that for a Southwestern town, we have SO FEW good Mexican restaurants!

Btw, I can't wait to "come home" to visit the family in OC for Thanksgiving. There's nothing like eating some comida muy buena at the perfect hole in the wall that's being kept en la familia. ;-)

Utah Girl says:

I can't wait for Cafe Rio to open here! I can't believe it's taken so long, it must be the city slowing it down! Darn politicians!

All I have to say to the nay-sayers is, Great, stay away, go to your authentic joints, because that will keep the lines shorter for those of us who love their food!
