The prettiest purple I ever have seen

Behold our annual 100 Favorite Dishes countdown! Every day until the publication of our fantabulous Best Of Issue, we'll list our favorite meals this year in descending order. Enjoy, pass it on, and tune in daily!

A lot has been written about Afters Ice Cream's ice-cream-stuffed milky buns, but to be frank, they're not even my favorite thing on the menu. They're fun, sure, but after one, two, or twenty, you kind of get over the novelty.

And that's when you realize that Afters' biggest strength isn't the donuts or the hip decor or the streetwear designing owners (though they're a plus); no, it's in the actual ice cream.

Their flavors are on point, and my favorite of all is the jasmine milk tea.

Everything about it is just so delightful. It's smooth and creamy but still light. It's flavor is spot on -- more jasmine tea than (sometimes) sickly sweet milk tea. And the color, oh the color, it's the most soothing shade of purple I've ever eaten.

It goes perfect with the Southern California summers. No matter how warm, how sticky from sweat you are when you get to Afters, after you sit down and have a little wooden spoonful of jasmine milk tea ice cream, you get just the tiniest glimpse of nirvana. Next thing you know, you're at ease in the shade of Afters' two pop ups and everything is great. And, oh, you still have half a scoop to go.
