Viet-Mex, New Vietnamese-Mexican Restaurant, Opening in Garden Grove

Gracias, source!
Coming soon...cam on and gracias!

I've heard of Vietnamese restaurants renaming bún as "fideo" and goi cuon as "taquitos" to get Mexican clienteles inside their doors. I've heard Mexican restaurants rename their fideo as pho and burritos as goi cuon to get Mexicans in. Then you have Dos Chinos, who mashes the two cuisines into glorious luxe lonchera desmadre.

But a restaurant that served Mexican AND Vietnamese food, with no fusion but rather cohabitation? I think there was one in SanTana years ago, but OC consumers tend to like their Mexican and Vietnamese food separately. But that just might change with the opening of Viet-Mex, a restaurant about to open up shop on the corner of Harbor Boulevard and Lampson Avenue in Garden Grove.

No other clues exist, and I personally haven't swung by to look for a menu. But by the banner, it looks like there'll be pho and pozole, side by side. Will there be bánh mì and tortas? Goi cuon and small burritos? Carne asada alongside bó luc lac? Al pastor mixed with xá xiu? One can only dream...

No sean ignorantes.. They're not stealing anything. Mangoes, cilantro and rice (for Horchata) are all Asian and Tamarindo is African so stop it.

Who decides what's authentic? My mother is Asian and married a Mexican and she can make Pozole from a recipe that came from my grandmother.. It has nothing to do with who makes the food. What is a real Mexican?!

They should have real Mexicans making the Mexican food and real Vietnamese making the Vietnamese food. Two separate menus with nice pictures of what the dishes look like and I am sure they will do very well. Make sure the food is authentic, though, just my opinion. When I want Mexican food, I want real Mexican food and not a "version" of it, same with Asian, Greek and Italian food.

There's Mexican foods from Asia.  Chamoy for one, that's based on the ume plum or in Vietnamese, it's xi muoi, is from South China.  Camote de cerro is from Japan.  Salvadoran salpicon seems to be... fried rice. Some Peruvian foods seem to be Chinese.  There's bananas from Southeast Asia, and coconuts from, probably, South Asia.

What is a torta? It's FRENCH bread sandwich.  You all seem to like beef, pork, and chicken more than the native turkey.  You all eat a lot of rice.  Isn't the durito a bit like a shrimp chip?  There's more and more Mexican and American twists on sushi.  People are always adapting foods.  It's not a big deal.  Sriracha is made from jalapenos.  Burritos are made with wheat, and were mostly developed in California.  Who invented bacon wrapped Sonora dogs?  Did  you know Italian food doesn't use much cheese?  It's an American thing.

There's the fancy fusion they write about in the news, but there's also a lot of working class grassroots hybrid foods, and that's been done a lot longer than the fancy things.  Pizzas, burgers, chili dogs, burritos, california roll, breakfast burritos, tortas, banh mi, pho, tempura, tostada salad, macaroni salad, chinese chicken salad, cesar salad, chicken katsu, elotes, and a bunch of other foods are hybrids invented for local tastes.

@unclebetoscafe if some of the burger restaurants add vietnamese food, they'll have viet food, burgers, burritos, tacos, pastrami, fried chicken, sandwiches, quesadillas, roast chicken dinners, and breakfast.

there's a steam table chinese place in pico union that also has mexican food, and also some kind of southeast asian thing as well.  so, yes, a new concept, but not totally new.

I  hope it takes off.
