Chia Seed Producer Facing Lawsuit After Selling Infected Product at an OC Whole Foods

Make sure it's not contaminated!

Remember chia seeds? Early 2014's new fad health food? Well, if you decided to try them out, you might want to check your supply. Navitas Naturals, a producer of chia seed powder, is being sued for selling batches of the stuff contaminated with salmonella. You're choice of retailers won't protect you either. The infected batches were distributed to Whole Foods in the United States and Canada at the beginning of March.

In total, about 65 people have gotten sick from the powder, including two in Fountain Valley. So, yeah, make sure you check your powder.

How can you tell if you have salmonella infection? The symptoms are abdominal pain, chills diarrhea, fever, nausea, aches and pains, and vomiting.

The best way to avoid salmonella? Cook whatever you're eating to a safe temperature -- 160~165 degrees Fahrenheit -- but seeing how most nouvelle chia seed recipes just tell you to soak them overnight well.. no dice.
