Costco at The District in Tustin Selling Real Hawaiian Poke This Weekend!

Costco's limu poke.
Of a thousand reasons to visit Hawaii, poke has to be in my top ten. This is the food I crave as soon as the plane's landing gear hits the tarmac--cubes of fish or other seafood, usually raw and mostly ahi tuna, seasoned lightly with salt, soy, wasabi or any number of flavorings. Every supermarket on every island has some in the back, next to the fish. And one of the best I've had there, I kid you not, is Costco's. Yes Hawaii's Costcos--on the islands that have Costcos--make excellent poke. They're consistently fresh, vibrant, raw fish made into sweet, sweet sea candy. Ideally, you want to eat this stuff with steamed rice, but over there, we eat ours in the food court plain, washed down with their 55-cent soda.

Now the Costco in Tustin at The District will serve poke this weekend, starting tomorrow and until Sunday. The woman behind the booth told me that they were testing it out on Monday, and if it's successful, they'll continue to do it every weekend.

Thumbs up for Costco's poke!
How does it taste? I took some home and discovered that it's identical to the ones I've had in Hawaii's Costcos (Hurray for Costco consistency!). There will be only four flavors on offer: shoyu, limu, wasabi, and a spicy mayo. And it must be said that Costco's poke ain't cheap. It starts at $15.99 per pound and tops out at $17.99 per pound, which is even more expensive than what Whole Foods sells their poke for ($14.99 per pound). But these are the same prices that the Costcos in Hawaii charge for poke (Hurray again for Costco consistency!) Besides, you don't want what Whole Foods calls poke. Just for comparison, I bought some of theirs on the same car trip and it didn't taste like candy; it tasted like bait.

Edwin Just to let you know, The Costco at the District will have their fresh Poke EVERY weekend from Fri-Sun (until it runs out for the weekend) and we are up up upping our order to meet the super popular demand. Thank you so much for the shout out!  I'm now famous (from the photo) but only recognizable with a hair net on. I'll be signing autographs in front of the poke booth all weekend! ;) (no not really)

Went Saturday afternoon and all they had left was spicy ahi tuna poke, which was fine. Everything else had sold out. The person said they actually fly it out from the Hawaii Costco. They were suppose to have it Sunday too, but they've already sold out. They will probably have it again Friday.

Went to Whole Foods and their seafood ceviche/poke bar was on sale for $9.99/lb this weekend....not bad. Outside of Hawaii, Las Vegas makes the best poke (Poke Express).

How can we find out which weekends the poke company will be at that costco? Sometimes they are there and other times they are not.

North Shore Poke Co in Huntington Beach has very good poke, and you would be supporting a local business as well.

Hawaii is far, but you can pretend you're there by eating poke from Costco - Jackie, Emily, Marisa, Debbie, Roseann

I tried the poke a few weeks ago and it was horrible -- the tuna wasn't fresh and had a gummy consistency. Maybe they worked out the kinks?

@ltdsign  It is every weekend Friday- Sunday until the Poke sells out. We didn't know there was going to be an article written. (i'm the awkward deli employee in the hairnet, seemingly photobombing the fish photo above!)  We were super excited about all the attention but we didn't order enough poke this week for the overwhelming response this article brought us. Thank you Edwin! We will be ready next weekend with a larger order to meet the super popular demand! And every weekend after that Friday-Sunday while supplies last.
