Troy High Students Stop Chik-fil-A From Being Sold on Their Campus--For Now

Not in Fullerton schools...
Remember the Fullerton superintendent who pulled the plug on Troy High School's production of The Laramie Project, an oral history of the event surrounding the murder of gay University of Wyoming Student Matthew Shepard? Dr. George Giokarsis?

Well, Fullerton Joint Union High School District (FJUHSD) Gay-Straight Alliances aren't just upset with him for that--they're also upset with him over his handling of a district contract to sell Chik-fil-A chicken sandwiches on high school campuses through an independent contractor. For those of you who don't remember, Chik-fil-A President and COO Dan Cathy has gone on record against same-sex marriage, and Chik-fil-A and its charitable foundation has donated money to anti-LGBT organizations.

"The essential questions we're asking is, 'To what degree, if any, should the exercise of a person's First Amendment freedom of speech rights have an impact on a district business decision?'" Giokarsis told students at The Oracle, Troy High School's very good student newspaper. His comment was published in their March issue. "We're making a business decision, a healthy decision, hopefully, on what to provide students. We don't make a profit off of this. Everything is cost neutral."

Let's leave aside Giokarsis' laughable assertion that Chik-fil-A is a healthy meal. Last I checked, the First Amendment protected people's right to say something--but it doesn't protect them from ridicule or the social and business consequences of their opinions. And that's exactly what Troy Warriors are doing.

Giokarsis' statement was a response to many student's reactions to the idea of selling chicken sandwiches that might fund hate groups on school campuses. After receiving an email on Jan. 23 about the impending sale, students began to voice their concerns, and Giokarsis halted the shipment of the sandwiches. They were meant to go on sale Jan. 29. By early March, a petition was posted online to stop permanently the sale of the sandwiches.

"Many FJUHSD students feel it would be hurtful to have the school administration and district board of trustees and superintendent supporting an organization whose president is so vehemently against LGBTQ students," reads the petition. "While it may seem innocuous to merely have Chick-Fil-A on campus, giving the opportunity for the organization to make money on our campuses is still a form of support for an organization that has made comments that are offensive to many of our students." It has since garnered over 300 signatures. Good job, students! And stay vigilant...

Ah yes, if you disagree with a publication, it must be communist. That word is so overused by right wing mental midgets that it no longer has any real meaning to them. OC Weekly represents Orange County, it just doesn't represent douchebags like you Steve.

Not supporting gay rights is one thing, actively funneling corporate profits into hate groups like CFA does is something completely different. Why should people be tolerant of hate groups?

Chris J Caroselli

Another wonderful example of why tolerance is a one-way street. Really unfortunate that people like Gustavo and these protesters are labeling anybody a "hate group" just because they don't support gay rights. I don't support them either..I dont hate them, I just don't want anything to do with them.

7,001,084 California voters voted yes on Prop 8. The defense of Marriage Act. Seven in 10 African Americans who went to the polls voted yes on Proposition 8, "What I believe is that marriage is between a man and a woman" -Obama

LGBT Community: Let's fight for tolerance and acceptance! But if you are against us then fuck you. Yeah ok that's the best logic ever.

That link mentioned nothing about the observed behavior of nearly 1,500 animal species and offered nothing to refute the theory that sexual orientation is biological. In fact, the article reinforced the idea. The idea that one can choose to be gay or straight is still a ridiculous argument. As a heterosexual, I know that my sexual orientation was never a choice and it would be impossible for me to decide to be gay. Consider the possibility for yourself. Would you be able to to choose to no longer be attracted to women and to only be attracted to men? The article mentions that learned behavior can influence whether or not one acts on their biological desires, but this only explains why people repress their true feelings. The most important logical fallacy made in this article was mistaking what defines someone as gay. "If we define being gay as engaging in homosexual behavior then people stop being gay as soon as they stop engaging in this behavior." This is obviously not true because what actually determines ones sexual orientation is who they are attracted to, not the sexual acts they have committed. If this logic were true, then a 30 year old virgin would be neither gay nor straight just because of the fact that he/she had not had sex. As far as those in the LGBT community that claim to have chosen to be gay, they represent a tiny, almost non existent minority and it's more likely that they were unaware of their repressed biological feelings. For these people, including your aunt and cousin, the only choice they really made, was to come to terms with their true biological impulses.

If you're ignorant enough to think you choose sexual orientation like choosing to date girls with big boobs or being "attracted" to Asian guys, then you must believe YOU could be gay if you chose to be attracted to your same gender. You don't switch off and on being gay or straight; it's who you ARE.

@Jonathan: http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/2003361/ Also supports the opinions of the previous article I posted. The born gay theory also negates an entire group of the LGBT community that admits to CHOOSING to be gay. I have an aunt and cousin that are from this group. Both straight their whole lives, then all of sudden, they're not lol. If I have to take their word for it. If Christians don't have the right to tell someone how they feel in their own body, neither do LGBT activists when people's personal experiences don't reflect a psuedo-scientific assumption.

You think Chik-fil-a really cares? The last gay-lead crusade failed and business is better than ever. The company is closed on Sundays too. So a bunch of kids aren't going to cause a dent. In fact, I think I'll eat there three times this week in support of their right to free speech and religion.

Homosexuality in the animal kingdom is an observable fact. To my knowledge, there are no research papers that refute this. There are only a few poorly conceived blogs and "conservapedia" references claiming that humans should not justify animal behavior because it's morally wrong. I'm yet to find any actual scientific paper that offers any facts refuting that over 1,500 animal species have been observed to display homosexual behavior. If you have a link, please post it, because I would love to see someone try to convince me that the thousands of instances in which this behavior was observed was just mass hallucinations. And the article that you provided, while an interesting opinion piece, offered very little, if any, factual evidence. Mostly just flawed logic.

Wouldn't real progress be the elimination of all processed foods sold to the district at ridiculous prices that masquerades as "nutrition?"

Marlon Spears

What other foods are available to students there? And what was Chik-Fil-A replaced with? Personally I would have been angry if someone limited my ability to choose a food because they thought it encouraged obesity. Let me decide what I want to eat.

My 16-year-old daughter is an active member of the Troy Gay-Straight Alliance. She is livid about the play being cancelled. She also hates the idea of Chick-fil-a being on campus for two reasons: the political issues you mentioned AND it is not a good idea to encourage teenagers to eat fast food on a daily basis. The superintendent has engaged in some loathsome intimidation tactics with the leadership of GSA.

Never once did the Head of Chik-Fil-A state he hates gays, but if he did maybe you could send me a link so that I may correct myself. Hormonal pregnancy. Is that your excuse? Sad . Sounds more like anger issues, but carry on.

It's actually not debatable, Marlon. Scientific research has documented a lot more than just dogs mounting each other. There have been documented cases of same sex monogynous animals in the wild. Gay male penguins will even steal eggs from females and raise the chick as their own.

Everyone can support what they feel is right..if u don't want to eat chicken sandwiches because u think it promotes hate...well then don't...but don't take them away from people who enjoy them because u have different beliefs..ridiculous! !

Marlon Spears
Marlon Spears

@Michelle: That's debatable. There's no actual evidence that there gay animals, just evidence of homosexual behavior. For example, make dogs mounting other male dogs. That doesn't mean the dog is gay, it's how dogs show dominance in the animal kingdom. It would be like an alien watching American Football and thinking all those guys want to have sex with each other, rolling around in the grass in right white pants lol (a topic for another time). I pride myself on not using foul language or disrespecting others in debates. There's no need. Favorite quote of mine by Joseph Farrell: "If you go in for argument, take care of your temper. Your logic, if you have any, will take care of itself." I accept your apology btw, so it's squashed as far as I'm concerned. I only pointed out that the same things are almost always done when the topic of gay rights comes up. Just a bunch of yelling. Spirituality and Science are not mutually exclusive, but if one believes in spirituality, they can't shoot down someone else who believes in a spiritual entity that frowns on a given behavior.

Science changes constantly and when more of us evolve into more spiritual human beings science will evolve with it..

Michelle Villagomez
Michelle Villagomez

Hence the word you just used. Natural. Being gay is natural. And again I apologized for the name calling and cursing. One you're no saint and I guarantee you've gotten in a heated discussion where you were impulsive and used foul language while trying to get your point across. Not saying it's right not saying it's wrong, you found it to be inappropriate and when I realized I offended you I apologized so you can stop bringing that up

Marlon Spears
Marlon Spears

It's not, but scientifically, it kind of is. Unless you want to go on a spirituality tangent, I'm just talking basic natural law.

I think attraction has many depths to it and to just simplify it as sexual is kind of narrow minded.. We humans are much deeper than that.. Friends as well as lovers, there is attraction beyond words which cheapens it.. Some people who shoot straight will not acknowledge an attraction to someone of the same gender for many reasons.. Its sad to be saddled with a mind and heart so conditioned as to not allow truth about the feelings of another for fear of being labeled. You rob yourself of something.. A free spirit.. Beauty is everywhere. Open your eyes and your heart and your mind. Not everything is just about fucking.

Marlon Spears

I don't think anyone has forgotten. You couldn't escape it if you wanted, there are stories all day everyday ranging from the horrific to the "not news at all". That having been said, not everyone cares. That's unfortunate, but it's a byproduct of an age of constant news, people become apathetic. I personally believe gays should have all the same rights and responsibilities as heterosexual couples. HOWEVER, the messages the LGBT community sends out as a whole are confusing and in some case just as bad as those who are homophobic. The pride parades are a perfect example. One on hand, the LGBT community constantly fights against stereotypes of promiscuity and being hyper sexualized, yet pride parades are quite overt in sexuality. They seem to center mostly around sex. That's harmful. Then you have people jumping to conclusions, calling others names for disagreeing, and being just as intolerant as the ones they fight. The old slogan I heard all the time was "What does it matter to you what someone does in their bedroom?" And that made sense. I just don't think anyone deserves notoriety for their sexual preference.

Michelle Villagomez
Michelle Villagomez

I think people tend to forget that gays have been brutally harassed and tortured because they are attracted to the same gender. So due to that fact is why we have gay pride things.. they are only trying to show people that it's okay to be gay it's not a bad thing. If straight people were discriminated against you'd see more straight pride stuff.. but that's not how things happened.

Michelle Villagomez
Michelle Villagomez

I'm aware you are straight. You've made that perfectly clear. Good for you.. Whatever I guess it's all based on sexual attraction and no human being is wrong or should be put down for their preference. All Ive been trying to say. And if you dont like hearing about other people's sexuality then don't mention yours either.

Marlon Spears
Marlon Spears

Good for you. But many people have a preference in what they are SEXUALLY attracted to. I love my family and my male friends, but I'm not sexually attracted to them. Unless you're saying gays fall in love on sight like a Disney film, you are acknowledging that they are basing their decision on who they date based off of what they are attracted to. Specifically, sexually attracted.

Jonathan Smith

Why are people still pretending that the CFA boycott is about anyone's opinion? Unless you've been asleep for the last 3 years, you are probably aware that CFA uses corporate profits to attempt to deny gay citizens their constitution rights and they donate funds to groups that are directly responsible for the "kill the gays" bill in Uganda.

Michelle Villagomez
Michelle Villagomez

No gender preference as in I like males. I like females. Or like me I like human beings, I dont care what organs they err born with.

It's funny when homophobes try to make the claim that gays demanding equal rights is somehow forcing a belief on them. Last time I checked, since states started allowing gay marriage, not one straight person has been forced into a gay marriage.

LMFAO. I told you a couple of posts back I was straight...and I don't hate myself for that so I'm hardly "heterophobic". I'm simply a compassionate hetero who accepts people for who they are...gay or straight. And I think it's pathetic (and sadly humorous) when bigots complain about how non-bigots won't tolerate their intolerance.

@miket1960

Not hate...more like righteous indignation. And I laugh at you for calling me a "hater" because I take intolerant ignoramuses like you to task for their bigoted views. I'm not going to apologize for being "intolerant" of homophobes like you.

@miket1960

Actually...I'm "straight but not narrow". And I believe it's YOUR thought process that's skewed if you really believe someone "chooses" to be gay. It appears you're just a typical homophobe who acts as if being gay is simply some nasty habit (or disease) one just picks up along the course of their life and not an integral part of a person's identity. Grow up.
