Chipotle Raising Its Prices

Soon to be just slightly more expensive.

According to an announcement by Chipotle during an earnings call last week, that barbacoa burrito with extra sour cream is going to cost you a bit more soon. The chain is instituting the first price hike since 2011. They cite rising costs for beef, avocados and cheese for the increase.

What does this mean for you? Expect to pay about 3 to 5% higher for your meal. For a typical $8 burrito bowl, this translates to about 24 to 40 cents more.

The price increase will be rolled out in a few weeks, as soon as the new menu boards are installed.

Chipotle sucks, especially here in So.Cal. where we have an almost unlimited selection of better AND cheaper Mexican food. Who in their right mind would go to Chipotle when you can get a much better burrito/taco for less? Boggles the mind.

and then they wonder why I don't eat there very often, raising prices on the very same stuff they gave you before.

Uh, wages are only a part of expenses in running a business.  There's rent/mortgage, taxes (of which California has about the highest tax rate), workers comp, utilities, the food itself.

Get used to it. This isn't unique to Chipotle. All of the restaurant chains are raising prices. So are your grocery stores. The price of all major food commodities (except wheat) have risen dramatically, transportation and fuel have risen, labor costs and taxes have risen. healthcare has risen. And they are all planning for future cost increases caused by the new minimal wage proposals and Obamacare kicking in. I know a small restaurant chain owner in another state where the minimum wage was raised and his labor costs are up $2.5M this year over last year. Just wait until that sort of thing kicks in nationwide in an industry with <5% profit margins. McDonald's is going to close all restaurants on federal sites due to the fed min wage hike. Then pile on with Obamacare. The growth business will be in equipment that replaces human labor. You'll be ordering your restaurant meals with a mobile phone app or tablet on the counter. One manager will run a group of restaurants via wireless headset. The welfare and food stamp rolls with continue to pile on.
