Irvine Councilman's Twisted Logic To Block Chick-fil-A: It Would Be Too Popular

Larry Agran: Popular restaurants cause unacceptable pollution
In mid-January after winning public concessions, Irvine's Planning Commission voted to approve an application by Chick-fil-A to build its fast-food restaurant and drive-through in University Center, the shopping plaza next to the UC Irvine campus.

Chick-fil-A executives agreed to comply with all local building standards and city planners, who extensively studied the proposal for the 4,736-square-foot operation, determined the plan was reasonable in every facet.

But councilman Larry Agran wants to block the development and tomorrow will ask his colleagues to join him in overriding the planning commission's decision.

Given that it's one of Orange County's most corrupt, grandstanding and egotistical politicians doing the whining, you know his rationale will cause indigestion.

The 1992 Democratic Party presidential primary candidate noted in his Jan. 31 appeal the sort of twisted logic that proves he really does belong in Washington, D.C.

Here goes: We shouldn't have Chick-fil-A at the location because it would be too popular and, according to Agran's scorn, businesses that lure happy customers increase pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

(He did, however, stop short of outwardly demanding a losing, unpopular restaurant for the property.)

Agran also claims the restaurant would reduce parking spaces at the shopping center and that drive-through traffic will harm Irvine's air quality.

You have to applaud the councilman for his audacity. Based on traffic studies completed by city staffers, the Chick-fil-A's drive-through lanes would peak at no more than 18 vehicles at a time per day. Indeed, during the overwhelming majority of each day, the numbers are projected to be much smaller.

Contrast Agran's imaginary horror with an undeniable fact: A professional politician for more than 30 years, he has voted in just the last decade for developments that added tens of thousands of cars each day to traffic congestion in Irvine.

City staff recommended that the council's Republican majority ignore Agran's latest tantrum.

This proposed Chick-fil-A will occupy the site of the former Lee's Sandwiches.

He's suffering from CFAGS - Chik-Fil-A Grudge Syndrome.  After all, if a company is not 100% for everything that the BLTG mafia wants, they must be anti-BLTG.

I don't eat there because the food is LGBT: Lame, Gelatinous Bland, Tasteless.

I don't eat a Chick-Fil-A because of their anti-LGBT stance. But Larry Agran choosing to selectively interfere with free enterprise is laughable...if not blatantly hypocritical.

I completely agree with blocking the drive thru component of chickfila. There is no need for a 4th drive thru in University Town Center and it just happens that the drive thru will actually be right behind at the Anteater shuttle bus stop (I would rather avoid instances to breath in the extra fumes of cars) and it blocks pedestrian traffic coming to and from the bridge( we already know chances of getting hit by a car are pretty high for UCI students). Lets have a Chickfila without the drive thru.

Folks, be patient, because King Larry is on his last leg.  When the results of the Great Park Audit are finished he and his clones, Beth Krom and Sukhee Kang will be finished in local politics. The era of the Agranistas will just be a badmemory of the past.

He is clearly and idiot. I don't go the place because of their stand on LGBT.

Agran needs to retire again. Him, and moonbeam need to go. Their spicy sandwich with waffle fries are awesome!

Chik-fil-A's owner is very conservative (and purportedly anti-gay) so that probably doesn't sit well with Larry Agran.

Councilman is nothing more than a con man. This is a complete shakedown. Also how is the investigation  going for him and the misappropriation of funds for the Great Park? Alledgedly him and his friends misappropriated millions from the park for their own use.

How about a compromise? The Fill-A-Chick is only open on Sundays.

We have a Chik Fila next to our subdivision with a line down the street at lunch and and on Saturdays but I don't recall a toxic plume above it.

How twisted his logic is depends on the location within the lot, how close to driveways etc. One of the VVM outlets had a list (or linked to list) of the longest In and Out lines. Maybe Larry is just looking out for his constituents quality of life and not looking for campaign contributions.

Ha! I should saved that line for April 1.

Wonder if he knows Chik-Fil-A has a regional headquarters in Irvine and they are thinking of expanding?

At least In-In-Out did not want to put a location there, that really is too much traffic.

Agran has been dirty his whole career.  What I'm thinking is Chick-Fil-A didn't line his pockets or somehow compensate him  so he's against it.  And it's surprising to me that the Irvine City Council has escaped any serious investigation of the way it does business over the past thirty years.  That's a tip OCW, start looking (I mean REALLY looking) at money trails and...you'll be very happy with the results....

When you call someone an idiot it is wise to check your grammar before posting. You know, so you don't look like a bigger idiot.

There is already an In-n-Out in that shopping center.
