Anaheim Wants to be the Most Beer-Friendly City in Orange County

Beers at Noble Aleworks' taproom in Anaheim

In most California cities, opening a brewery is a big, regulatory pain in the ass. But in Anaheim--where four production breweries already reside--it just got a little bit easier thanks to an open-minded mayor that prides itself in upholding the city's "commitment to freedom and limited government."

Like any business in the State where alcohol is involved, opening a new brewery means abiding by not only the rules set in place by the Alcoholic Beverage Control, but also the federal stipulations from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau and the individual zoning and permitting nightmares for each city--often not written with breweries in mind.

Two weeks ago, however, Anaheim's City Council acted on the recommendation of Mayor Tom Tait's Regulatory Relief Task Force (yes, there is a committee whose sole purpose is to reduce governmental regulations) and eliminated most of the red tape associated with opening a brewery in city limits.

That means scrapping the requirement for conditional use permits and instead creating an entirely new code category for alcohol beverage manufacturers that streamlines permitting for manufacturing as well as tasting rooms in more than 90% of Anaheim's commercial and industrial zones.

The new code category comes with its own set of operational standards (including building size, outdoor space and occupancy), but greatly reduces both time and processing costs for people hoping to open not just breweries, but also cider works, meaderies and small distilled liquor businesses.

Anaheim already has four breweries--Anaheim Brewery, Noble Aleworks, Phantom Ales and Bottle Logic Brewing, the last two of which began brewing late last year--and joins nearby Long Beach, which voted in February to examine its brewing licenses and policies, in looking for ways that cities can capitalize on the economic benefits of the craft beer boom.

Already home to the annual OC Fest of Alesand this year's inaugural Firkfest, Anaheim is using its latest regulation removals to position itself as the most beer-friendly city in Orange County. The city more affectionately known as Anaslime (or Anacrime, depending on your derogatory preference) is poised to become a formidable hub for beer. Huzzah!

Noble Ale Works is exactly midway between my job in Anaheim and my home in Orange.  :-)

Marijuana is more of a drug than alcohol or tobacco? Wrong. Try less bloviating, more reading.

Meanwhile hey kick in the doors of every dispensary selling non toxic safe cannabis o folk who don't go out and drive drunk and kill people behind the wheel or have violent episodes at home ending up in court for domestic violence.

Just looked different.

LOL " the city's "commitment to freedom and limited government."

The city of Anaheim CA has a police department under Randall Gaston, Roger Baker, John Welter and Raul Quezada that emulates the tactics of the East German Stasi and Mein Kampf playbook. Deliberately, with premeditation and malice of forethought targeting and harming US born Latinos while hiding behind the color of authority.

My name is German Santos and I approve this message. Cheers!

You're thinking of Fullerton. Cholo's (and other actual dangerous criminals) are walking targets. Expect the occasional overreaction.

There's plenty of room for growth throughout the Metro L.A. area. And the more that's out there... the more the culture changes. I love seeing the variety at pub get bigger every year... and when places that never carried craft beers before... start carrying.

I think I know! He sounds like me! I would go into municipal government to make things better! I would love to see business growth, and enough revenue to pay my staff well, and to keep roads up, the medians green and make this town I devoted my service too, be the best it can be... since I cared so much to run. Now Iunderstand that some leaders have their heads up their ass. Like how Mormon's who run Glendora made it difficult for Alosta Brewing Co. to start up... so they skated around the stupid ultra-religious mindset, and got a warehouse in Covina... who was happy to see the business! ANd then there was Bell. Well, that was a scam... and that city government was mixed in White and Hispanic. Then you have my native Los Angeles who just pile on the red tape and rules... and make dumb rulings about eCigs even though it's just a vapor. These morons just hate cigarette culture so much, that they are willing just do whatever they want! I for one don't smoke, but I've had friends use eCigs to quit... so in the end it looiks like Anaheim isn't perfect... and perhaps in years to come, minorities will run and win... but they seem to be headed in the right direction, and current ethnic makeup doesn't really matter and you're going to bitch about it, you're making it an issue... when it really isn't. I'll tell you what, if that's what it takes... old white dudes.. if that's the only group that gets it...they know what makes America great... Freedom, Liberty and work ethic... then that's who I want! Nothing against anyone else... it's not personal. In fact I know some non-white folks who have these values... I'm just trying to make a point.

I vaguely recall some news story... a shit-hole off La Palma Ave. Wasn't that a cholo? You join a gang and get involved with criminal shit... you may encounter an overreacting cop. That's how life works. It may have been a bit too much but oh well. He chose his path. He knew that law enforcement exists to go after people like him. The real crime is what happened in Fullerton!

Jonathan Taylor, all these police department have good cops and they have asshole cops. I've had a run-in with Anaheim's "finest" before. That's another problem they can work on... same with other municipalities. But as it turns out..for the most part, when I go to Anaheim, I don't get my rights violated by the cops. As for weed... Listen I don't think weed is the worst thing and I'm fine with it being legal as long as it's highly regulated... And I would recommend that Anaheim or any other city... only allowed these current dispensaries in industrial areas. But it's no big loss. Yeah it's a loss of revenue, but not as much as mainstream goods such as alcohol. And it is a drug more so than Alcohol or Tobacco. I'm not going to go off on that "gateway drug" bullshit, but I will say that every daily smoker I've encountered is pretty unambitious and typically out of it. So I don't really care all that much about pot. So it is pretty great that the civic leaders (who are not actual cops) are making it a just a little easier for business to get started.

Shannon, thanks for your reasonable rational non-childlike response! All sarcasm aside, the existence of your mentality baffles me. The Anti-White White Person is definitely a modern thing, and did not exist years ago... and I imagine the trend will eventually die out anyway. You'll just be remembered as far left sheep who could not think for themselves. You can question my intellect all you want. In the end my world view was sensible and realistic... not yours. Now that I'm home, I will now go respond you your asinine comment. I suppose you'll just be angry and call me names... but I hope that you do stop and think that maybe I might have a logical reason for bitching... other than being some evil capitalist Republican who must be uncaring and racist. Of course this isn't true and anyone who would exaggerate this and believe it be true, must also believe that Popeye really did suddenly get strong, after a can of Spinach.

The more the better in my book.

I was underwhelmed with Anaheim Brewery's offerings when I went shortly after they opened, maybe I'll give them another shot.

I'm a fan of Noble's Naughty Sauce, but the Rosalita is shite.

Shutting down medical marijuana dispensaries is making steps towards a business friendly climate? Yeah, friendly to the black market....

Could start with signing the deal with the angels so that local brews can be served at the stadium.

Noble Ale Works makes yummy brews. And it's just a short walk from the stadium.

I commend Anaheim for making steps towards a business friendly climate. Now I saw some hateful ignorant comments already, but I suppose that's the great thing about America... you can speak your mind no matter how ridiculous and stupid your comments sound. Anyway, lightly regulated capitalism is the real progressivism in our world. FACT.

Freedom? Limited government? Freedom for cops to shoot unarmed men in the back? Limited government which bans medical marijuana dispensaries?

@paullucas714

You beat me to the punch, Paul!

It's the usual "swill all the suds you want...but don't smoke pot" hypocritical BS.
