Poorman's OC '4 Freee': El Torito Celebrates National Margarita Day w/$2 Margs, Cheap Eats, & FREE $25 Food/Booze Certificates Here!!!

photo-539.JPG

What is National Margarita Day?!? I had never heard of it until the day before yesterday! I guess it's a day where we glorify, celebrate, and consume margaritas. Nothing wrong with that! Still don't really know what it means, but thanks to the fine folks at the legendary El Torito, I am now a huge fan! You won't even believe what they're doing to celebrate it tomorrow at all 57 of their restaurants! Read on!!!!!!!

Established in 1954 by Larry Cano, El Torito has a history of innovation in Mexican cuisine in the U.S. They're credited with introducing the "margarita cocktail," in addition to popularizing such items as tableside guacamole, the sizzling fajitas platter and the edible tostada shell. They had incredible freeeee Happy Hour Buffet Spreads back in the day that were as elaborate as any Sunday Brunch buffet. You'd buy one drink, and eat 10 meals worth of great food any day of the week! Plus, the free food items always changed. My most wonderful memory of Larry Cano wasn't Larry himself (who no longer owns the chain), but his gorgeous daughter, Lea, who I once made out with while a DJ on KROQ. At one point, El Torito had more than 100 locations. They now have 57, including 13 in the OC: Tustin, Irvine, Placentia, Anaheim, Laguna Hills, Buena Park, Dana Point, Fullerton, Orange, Cypress, and 3 locations in Long Beach. For more information, visit http://www.eltorito.com/

Once again, El Torito has hit a Home Run! Here's what they're offering tomorrow on National Margarita Day (Sat. Feb. 22) all day and night at all El Torito locations:

At The Bar
$2 House Margaritas
$2 Shots of Tequila
Food specials: 50¢ Wings, $1.50 Tacos, $4 Chicken and Carnitas Burritos, and $5 Steak Burritos.

In The Dining Room
$5 Cadillacs
$2 Shots of Tequila

In all seriousness, this is a pretty impressive deal. $2 Margs all day and night. WOW!!!!! And it's not just their original margarita only as you might expect. No, the $2 Margaritas give you plenty of variety, a choice between Original, Strawberry, Rasberry, Melon with Midori, Pineapple/Coconut, and Mango. Awesome!

1 Very Important Footnote
I had to visit an El Torito myself (unannounced as usual) to see what was really going on. I hadn't been to El Torito for years, so like a good investigative reporter, I popped into their Irvine restaurant across from John Wayne Airport. At 6 PM on a Thursday evening, the place was packed, both bar and dining room. There was great energy! The staff was incredibly friendly including Manager Alex and Personality Plus Bartender Donna. The crowd was having a lot of fun! Most importantly, how good was the food and drink? Well, here's your answer. The plate of Wings and the Melon with Midori Margarita in the main pic were my order. The Margarita was incredibly good and the wings were very tasty! Tomorrow, you'll get that Marg all day long for $2 and the Wings for 50 cents each. Bring on National Margarita Day!

Back in 1993 after a long, long day of work I met about 15 co-workers at a Mexican food inspired joint near the Path Station in Hoboken, New Jersey. Everyone was having a good time and the tequila heavy margaritas just kept flowing. We must have ordered about close to $700 dollars worth of margaritas and various other drinks over the course of 3 hours. Well, it so happened that I had befriended our waitress' husband a few months earlier by giving him this pair of insanely bright pair of red pants (which I no longer wore) after striking up a conversation with him as he DJ'd one of the evenings at this restaurant. When it came time to settle our bill I was shocked when it came out to be about $150. We ended up leaving like a $250 tip and started walking to hit up a few other bars.

Because all the tequila and drinks started loosening me and others up I began halfway into the evening really flirting with a babe at work who I had my eye on but didn't really seem to even notice I existed. Well, as the night wore on we really seemed to hit it off and we continued our little flirting and it evolved it some touchy touchy. Well, as the evening wound down I ended up falling into my bed drunk as a skunk.

As I woke up the next morning my first thoughts were about how great last night was and how much fun I had with the babe at work. I then thought I wondered how she was and if she got home alright. As I rolled over to get out of bed I couldn't believe my eyes but there she was in the bed besides me. Thank you tequila! Thank you tequila! Thank you tequila...you made my dreams come true that evening. Even though I didn't remember a darn thing!

I went to El Torito for an, ahem, "extended lunch" with a friend during my work week while my supervisor was at a meeting. Took a seat in the Bar, ordered a margarita and of course my Supervisor walks in (mind you, I work in the education system) and sees me as She heads to the dining room.  My friends runs to the bartender and says screams STOP - Bartender offers to put it in a regular glass, not a margarita glass, I down that sucker faster than a teenager sneaking a drink for the first time, slide out the side door and haul my butt back to work.

Sure enough they try to bust me on being intoxicated on the job - DENY, DENY, DENY - I ended up with a slap on the wrist for taking a long lunch.

To this day:

Best tasting - and memorable - margarita I've had in my whole life!

A few years ago, my parents were visiting me from the East Coast. Over dinner at El Torito, they were bemoaning the fact that I was a college graduate with a $40k/yr education making $10 an hour as a glorified secretary answering phones at a Hollywood agency. so to make their yammering tolerable, I started sucking down prickly pear margaritas like nobody's business.

and somehow through my prickly pear goggs, I thought i saw peter dinklage sitting at a table from across the room--who my boss happened to represent at the time but I had only spoken hello to on the phone. so I force my parents to walk over with me to his table so I can show how cool and connected to celebs I am.

i interrupt his nice dinner with his wife by shouting HI PETER, IT'S ME, at the top of my lungs. except it wasn't him at all, not even close. my margarita goggles had blurred my vision. yes, this guy was white, but that was pretty much where the similarities ended. he muttered something back to me that i cannot repeat here.

needless to say, my parents were not impressed.

Oh margaritas, how I love you. As I started to try and think of my best margarita story, I realized that I have a lot of stories that involve margaritas! I don't know if that's good or bad, but here's my favorite: This guy I had only been dating for a couple months and I decided to take a weekend trip to San Diego to go to Sea World and do other touristy things. For dinner on the first night we went to Old Town. There used to be this great Mexican restaurant there - and they served margaritas in bird bath glasses. They were HUGE and sooo damn good.We drank, we ate, we laughed. It started raining so we huddled under a patio umbrella. We drank some more and that guy asked me to marry him. Maybe it was the alcohol, or the mariachis playing behind us - but we fell in love that night and have been together ever since. We had margaritas as the signature drink at our wedding several years later but nothing will be as good as those first margaritas together, cuddled close under the twinkling lights of a Mexican food joint.

I got tipsy on margaritas at happy hour, and made the mistake of going shopping. I spent $60 on mascara and face powder, which would normally cost me $16. But the silver lining was that it's the best mascara and face powder I've ever used. And now I learned my lesson, and I don't go shopping after drinking margaritas! :)

My most memorable moment with a margarita happened to be at El Torito last year on my 22nd birthday. I was having lunch with one of my best friends near campus since we had a 2.5 hour gap before we were about to take our first midterm in our next class. Admittedly, I did have my book and notes as a last minute review session at our table. The waiter comes by and asks if we would like anything to drink. I hesitantly looked at my friend and said "I don't know.. I've never had a drink before taking a test.." But my friend insisted, "well it's your birthday -- you can get a margarita." The waiter heard it was my birthday and agreed with my friend saying, "it's your birthday, you definitely need to get a drink!" So strawberry margaritas were ordered and they were so delicious! It was a great lunch even though we were quizzing each other on the class topics.

While taking the test, it was a very different, interesting experience. A memory I'll never forget! I remember reading the first question

6 times and didn't understand it so I skipped it so I could come back to it.. And I even caught myself falling asleep during my test for a few minutes. >.< Nonetheless -- I composed myself and finished the exam feeling good. I did receive and exceptionally good score when the tests were returned two weeks later.

I have a few embarrassing stories...all fun though and thankfully I remember them all. This happened at El Torito to top it off. I was out with friends when happy hour was until close. Hadn't been out in a while so I took full advantage. 7 house margaritas later after "bucking up" each one I met the porcelain god! I came back out like a champ and had 2 more! I promise not to drink as much if I win so they won't have mess to clean. bizkitlonelyworld@yahoo.com

My most memorable moment with a margarita was meeting up with my best friend for dinner from high school a few months ago and it was great because I had not seen her in over 16 years. We each had a few margaritas and a lot laughs catching up. It was a great night. sm302008@yahoo.com

My boss at my new job three years ago told me she wanted margaritas for her bday. So on her special day I made and brought her requested beverage to work. At lunch everyone indulged except a select few. The FNP I worked for flipped out on me when I asked if she would like some about drinking at work...and blah blah. Here I am thinking ask her so she doesn't feel left out; haha...so much for trying. The next day there is a system wide email about what the law says about alcohol at work and what the company's policy is on drinking at work. There was a lot of chatter at all the locations about what the email was talking about, why they were getting it and could we or couldn't we drink at lunch, etc.

All this commotion over a simple bday drink at work! :)

Margarita Fridays are a tradition in my family.

Also, when I was running half marathons my mom would have one waiting at the finish line!

well i think my most memorable margarita story would have to be the time i ventured out and decided to try a flavor that i would not have ordinarily tried - a margarita with serrano chiles! i think i drank 3 glasses of water with my 1 margarita because it was muy caliente! i'll be sticking with my usual cadillac margaritas from now on...

When I was a kid, my family would always join my mom's friends family for thanksgiving dinner. Every year the women would drink margaritas while they were preparing dinner. Of they were feeling generous (and had ingredients to spare) they would make virgin margaritas for the kids. One year they got a little too tipsy before making the kids margaritas and forgot to make them virgin. Woohoo! We had a good time that year.
