Why Comparing Five Guys and In-N-Out Is Stupid

Can you even tell the difference?

Ever so often I see two people get in an argument about Five Guys and In-N-Out, and I can't help but cringe. They directly compare the toppings, the meat and the buns like they're nothing, and they can't agree about which restaurant is better. Eventually it gets dropped, but everyone involved ends up slightly upset, and no one enjoys their food.

For the longest time, I've held my tongue (this isn't completely true -- when I was a college-paper editor I assigned a comparison, but that was a bad idea), but it's happening more and more often, and I can't take it anymore.

Comparing Five Guys Burgers and Fries and In-N-Out Burger is dumb. It's stupid, pointless, useless and dumb. No one should do it, and here's why.

1. They're completely different price levels

fiveguysburger.jpg
Flickr User Joey
Pictured: Like $8

Let's get this one out of the way first. A double-double sets you back a little over $3. A full double-double meal with fries and a drink doesn't even break $7. A double cheeseburger at Five Guys? You've already broken $8. If you also want fries and a drink? That's another $5 on top. For the same price as a meal at Five Guys, you could get two double-double meals.

That's not a bad thing mind you; it's just different. All I'm saying is that there's no point in comparing two things whose prices are different by a factor of two. Would you seriously compare McDonalds to Umami Burger? Or piss beer to something from The Bruery? Hell no you wouldn't, so why are you comparing Five Guys and In-N-Out.

2. They serve completely different purposes

Not going to impress anyone.

How would you feel about someone stopping by In-N-Out for lunch everyday?

Sure, that sounds horrible, but it also sounds believable.

What if someone told you they ate at Five Guys everyday? Well, that person just sounds like they should be dead.

Five Guys and In-N-Out service two different purposes in the quick-food world. Five Guys is a little bit of a destination, breaching into Ruby's Diner or Johnny Rockets territory. Normal people have taken dates to Five Guys -- cheap dates, sure, but dates nonetheless.

Everyone loves In-N-Out, but really it's more of a "we've both worked overtime today and don't want to change out of sweat pants" territory.

Why should I spend more of my hard earned money just because Charles Lam tells me; " little bit of a destination"" ? If you want something different at In-n-Out on your burger, Just Ask them! Don't pay more at FIVE GUYS just because its a "destination" where they ask what you want on your burger. This rationalization  of spending Alot more just so they ask what you want is so so IGNORANT and STUPID.

No, they are NOT!! They are terribly inconsistent with their food too. The first time I ate there it was good, not great, but decent, fair, middle of the road, but nothing spectacular. Then I went back again and it was one of THE worst burgers and fries I've ever eaten. I decided to try again, and again, and again, just to be fair. BIG mistake, colossal mistake. Each time was worse then the next. What a waste of my hard-earned cash. NEVER AGAIN!! They blew it, big time!! Most of these burger places are way over-hyped by the Liberal media, TV shows, newspapers, websites, their friends, and paid endorsements to deceive the public by giving them good reviews for lousy food. They are not very good at all. Eureka, Rounders, Counter, Back Abbey, Slaters 50/50, Umami, etc., are all that way too. They are completely OVER-HYPYED, OVER-PROMOTED, AND OVER-ENDORSED. I believe they all get their meat from the same supplier as well. They all taste and feel the same. They get them from Niman Ranch, and they aren’t that good at all. They use fillers and binders in the burgers. YUCK!!

Just had 5 Guys here in the Midwest where it's supposed to be the real deal. In N Out is still better.

Comparing the amount of salt I notice between the two, I prefer In&Out. Five Guys does have better fries, at least they seem to cook them properly. Have been mainly disappointed every time I got them from In&Out. But I go for bur-gur & so I&O FTW.

Most of the comment on the article were about how crappy the article is written. It was the one article on your magazine i ever read, maybe two articles. So I don't think I will read anymore for awhile.

You're doing it all wrong. You spend a two-hour block going to In-n-Out for the 4x4, Five Guys for the fries, then Tommy's for the chili. You then put the chili on the fries and enjoy with the 4x4. And high cholesterol.

Omg, Fudruckers beats the crap outta any burger joint!!!! And yes, about the same price range. And hey... at least people who have allergies are able to eat at either In N Out or Fudruckers without dying! Major plus for both!

After reading the blog it would seem to be more accurate to compare Five Guys with Fudruckers.

I think the reason people compare the two, is because In n Out is SOOO much better, and supposedly "not in the same league".

Why does the OCW never praise the true burger god.....FUDDRUCKERS!

but, for the record, In-N-Out all day long. 5G opened around the corner....went there once. haven't returned.

and, as far as bumper stickers go,...  'In-N-Out Urge' is better than '5-Guy-Urge'

The author is missing the main point here... it's that both places have a loyal following.  Five Guys is big on the East Coast and in the midwest, and In and Out is big in the Western Region.  Five Guys only recently is expanding into Western States and that's why people do the comarison - two chains with a loyal customer base, which one is better.  Comparing In and Out to Slaters 50/50 is stupid, but it's not all that outrageous to compare Five Guys to In and Out.  For my money - In and Out wins, but the habit beats them both.  TK is mediocre, IMO.

The author says it's stupid to compare Five Guys with In-N-Out and then proceeds to do just that. Now that's stupid.

I like both. I think In-N-Out is good for a tasty basic hamburger...Five Guys is good for going crazy with fun ingredient combinations. It's kind of pointless to criticize another person's palate preferences anyway...I was under the impression that "personal taste is never wrong".

"Boys! Stop fighting! You can BOTH marry me!" ;-)

I have never eatin at five guys. I didn't get the feeling of being there for the article . All I know is the more expensive and you have more choices. If you compared their hamburgers side by side at comparable construction I could have made a decision which one I like better or you could have done the same. apples to apples. Then maybe I could figure out which ones better in flavor and taste and appearance. So is so question of which ones better. Maybe someone else can do a better or another article.

Dennis Doroshenko

Till you go to "the counter" don't complain about "expensive". You too can make a burger that looks and tastes exactly like in n out. If you feel like getting sued.

The article looks like someone on a City College paper wrote it. I can write better than this (of course I write for a City College paper anyway... :D). More like a high school paper. Sorry kid, if you want to be part of the media then you better learn to take criticism just as sure as you love to give it. ;-)

Five Guys is waaaaay overrated. And frankly, not worth the cost. No value. They will go the way of Fatburger, closing stores. You will never in your life see an In-N-Out close.

You can eat at In-n-Out 3 times for the same price as one trip to Five Guys.
