Man.

Damn, we knew Lee's Sandwiches was on the out for homo-hating Chick-fil-A, but did they really need to tear down the entire building?

There's was some good stuff in there! The ceilings were high, the seating area was roomy and there was some pretty good kitchen space, but they just went and tore up everything. Look, you can still see the red, white and blue striping that used to go along the walls.

Demolition has been going on since at least Monday, when the picture above was taken.

What does this mean for the time it's going to take Chick-fil-A to open? Well, people knew Chipotle was coming to the University Town Center half a year ago, and it's still not open, and they didn't have to build an entirely new building.

This new location better be amazing enough to host some same-sex weddings, because if it's not, what's the point?

Irvine Company's screwing their commercial tenets has nothing to do with their opinions on sexual orientation. I have had so many favorite places disappear over the years and it is because of the greed of the Irvine Company. Yet I have to scratch my head. Because they will boot out a booming business like Steelhead Brewing Co because they demanded that the company sign a 20-year lease renewal at umpteen percent of their current lease. Any bets on how long it will be before the Moron Company actually gets any income from that property?

Love your mag but hate the "homo-hating" reference to Chik-fil-A already. Don't mind your sticking it to the folks who deserve it. I honestly feel that the company has gotten past it. It was their job to get over themselves as well as you getting over bashing them. Sheesh.

Putting Chic-Fil-Hate across from UCI is such BS. WTG, Irvine Co.

Whats does homophobia have to do with demolishing a building?

Whoa. I guess they need to add a drive-through and that parking area next to Lee's was totally inadequate. Not sure how they are going to fix that.

Right after we lost Universal / Gibson Amphitheater too. There aren't many venues left in SoCal like this.

I agree with that... I think the lease is up in 2015? Maybe they can build a new amphitheater at the Great Park adjacent to the new Wild Rivers that is being built there.

Very sad! Irvine Company is taking over everything at a wrong price. Lee's Sandwiches is the best!

Just one more in the litany of reasons to hate the Irvine Company.

They tore down the existing Popeye's building when they built the new Chik-Fil-A on Beach Blvd. in Westminster. Perhaps the higher-ups think destroying the old building purges the plot of land of any pro-gay mojo. I wouldn't be surprised if these backward asshats have a priest "purify" the grounds too. :-(

Wow.

But it's not as bad as when the evil Irvine Company demolished El Torito Grill at Fashion Island.  The edifice and patio that hosted those average-quality -- but all you can eat! -- Sunday brunches now exist only in my cerebellum.

There is something going on in the fast food industry.  I have seen numberous building being torn down to the shell.  The Carl's Jr on Imperial Hwy/LaPalma in Anaheim is going through one now.  I have seen so many KFCs going through the same thing.  Anyone know what is going on with the massive remodels?  I hope it's more energy efficiency more than changing to be more "corporate".

@n2bigmuscle

It may be as simple as upgrading...but I still don't buy the supposed benevolence of most major fast food chains...
