No. 29: Hot Chocolate At The Catch

Tableside Hot Chocolate

We're now halfway through the Long March known as 100 Favorite Dishes (INSERT YEAR). YEAH!!!

Hey, don't ding us for listicles: Weekly DataLab studies show ustedes love this gimmick, launched in honor of our coming Best Of issue. Besides, it is rather fun to do this for us Forkers--an opportunity to highlight dishes from restaurants we'll never fully review, or secrets from old standbys. Anyhoo, let the march begin...

If our favorites happen to taste and look good, they definitely belong on this countdown. One example of a dish that performs double duty is walking distance from Angel Stadium (Stop fussing about your team name and just play ball!). At The Catch, the restaurant also has duel roles: spacious sports bar with a great beer selection at its core, formal dining featuring tableside service along the perimeter.

Most dessert menus have been there, done that. We're tired of creme brulee, flourless chocolate cakes and other treats not worth mentioning. Give us more salt in our sweets. Make it stand out. Or surprise us with something unexpected, like the hatch chile ice cream we discovered in a hotel restaurant. Happy endings are called that for a reason; you want to leave satisfied.

The misleading name of hot chocolate kept us from ordering, but our dining companion insisted we would be in for a treat. We should've been tipped off by our server rolling over a small cart. Instead, we watched her ignite a Bacardi-soaked mound of vanilla bean ice cream. Shielded by layers of chocolate and caramel, we imagined this is how science experiment volcanoes wished they looked like. But then she made it better, shaking cinnamon on this mini inferno until it achieved firework sparkler status. We liked the varying textures and temperatures of this unusual sundae, but the show took it over the top. If you want to be the center of attention, order this looker. Just remember to lean back, unless your eyebrows aren't a big deal.
