No. 94, Coney Dog at LinX

Hey, kids: guess what time is it? It's time to restart that Long March known as 100 Favorite Dishes (INSERT YEAR). YEAH!!! Hey, don't ding us for listicles: Weekly DataLab studies show ustedes love this gimmick, launched in honor of our coming Best Of issue. Besides, it is rather fun to do this for us Forkers--an opportunity to highlight dishes from restaurants we'll never full review, or secrets from old standbys. Anyhoo, let the march begin...

I love all hot dogs--have loved them since hearing both Vin Scully AND Jaime Jarrín extolling the virtues of Farmer John's as a kid. Love the Sonoran dog, the Chicago dog, the ones from Rochester, The Varsity in Atlanta, and so many more. But my favorite type of unadulterated dog (because no matter what I eat, it'll be buried underneath salsa of some sort) has to be the Coney dog: the tartness of the mustard, the mild sweetness of the chili, those sharp onions, the bun that somehow doesn't break even as both ends spilleth over. And while it's a standard of nearly all hot dog places, LinX in Orange offers the most refined Coney of them all.

See also:

Look at it: the finely diced onions, the plump weiner, the pretty potato bun, the sprinkle of parsley for a hint of sprightness. You might think it's some uppity disappointment, but it ain't: all the pieces fit together, and it's as messy as a five-year old.

The list:

95. Halal Pizzas from San Giovanni Pizzas
96. Clayuda at El Fortín
97. Lunch Buffet at Dosa Express
98. The Meats at Darya in Orange
99. Panocha at Taquería Zamora
100. Bean-and-Cheese Burrito from Del Taco

Linx is decent but pretty expensive for what you get. Don't expect to leave this place full unless you spend a lot of $.

Except for maybe San Giovanni Pizza, I'm underwhelmed with your first picks for the '13 list, which to me are as disappointing, out of the gate, as a past-their-prime slugger the Angels always seem to sign.

Step it up in your next at bat, please!

@JBinOC That's why these picks are in the 90s, and not the 10s! You don't like panocha? Well, that clears up one mystery of you haha...

Um, not a great joke to make after a post in which you write about your affinity for *sausage*

LOL
