No Taste of Newport This Year For First Time in 24 Years

Chronic Taco at Taste of Newport 2009

I haven't been to the annual Taste of Newport because it's CRAZY--good crazy, mind you. Great music, great food, great women, ambiance, all of it. It's as much a part of Newport civic life as the Boat Parade--and this year, for the first time in 24 years, it won't happen.

From Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce President and C.E.O. Steve Rosansky, who sent out an email this morning to members:

...The Chamber Board of Directors and Chamber Staff are conducting a complete review of all of our activities and events. As a result of this reassessment, it has been decided that the Taste of Newport will not be presented this year. Over the past 24 years, the Taste of Newport has grown into a major Southern California signature event. As a result, it has increasingly relied on the resources of the Chamber to the point of keeping us from our core mission of promoting, informing and educating our membership and serving the business needs of the Newport Beach community. Over the next year we intend to explore ways in which the Taste of Newport can be re-imagined and presented in a way which works for our members as well as all of those restaurants and businesses that have partnered with us in the past to stage the Taste.

Let's hope there's enough of a public uproar so that the Chamber folks reconsider...

Fuck Newport. If people want a taste of Orange County, this event needs to be held in Santa Ana.

They were operating in the red last year, I remember reading about it in the papers. Not enough businesses are supporting it. They don't hire anyone for pay anyway they want volunteers to work for free.

They're not hiring anywhere because thay have a new $137 MILLION overpriced City Hall that they didn't need.

As implied, it's not often an event that's as anticipated and well-regarded as Taste of Newport just pulls the plug on itself.  Does this Steve Rosansky guy really want to be known as the leader who did that?

But, since this is a food blog, I have to say, it's not really going to be missed from the dining standpoint as much as the sun-basking, the classy boozing, and the concert-watching standpoint.  At Taste of Newport, you seek out Sabatino's...you can hit up the always-reliable Royal Thai...and maybe get something at the Palm Terrace outpost (and I'm not even sure Palm Terrace has been there all of the last few years).

And what else?  Ummm...yeah, what else?  I can't think of another thing I desperately want to nosh on every year at T of N.

@Dennis210 The Chamber of Commerce functions separately from City Hall. They are supported by local business and definitely not working from a $137 million facility.
