Vegans Vandalize Beloved Huntington Beach Mural with McDonald's Characters On It

I don't really care for McDonald's, but I do care for murals. I remember seeing a McDonald's-themed mural in Huntington Beach off Edinger Avenue and Edwards Street years ago but never really gave it any thought, figuring it was a bunch of corporate spinning. Of course, the truth was more fascinating: as reported a couple of years back by my pal, local historian Chris Epting, the mural was actually painted in 1992 by a McDonald's manager named Saeed Danosian who happened to be an art instructor on the side and who had recently passed away.

It was a beloved piece of Surf City quirkiness--and now it's gone, painted over after it was vandalized by vegans as seen above.

Epting has the full story in his latest Huntington Beach Independent column, and is pretty peeved about it--and if you know Chris, you'll know he's one of the most pleasant guys around.

"As for the vandals, you can see from the photo Patterson took that it was a group of vegans making a 'statement,'" Epting wrote. "Never mind that their statement was at the expense of everyone else, that it ruined a precious piece of art and that it was flat-out vicious. Not to condemn all vegans, of course, but the militant fringe within any group needs to be called out for what it usually is: gutless, fly-by-night cowards."

The vandalism was such that McDonald's had to paint it over completely--no amount of restoration could save Danosian's work. They do hope to paint another mural in memory of the mural over it. And the Gunkist memories continue...

I am a vegan and this is wrong. This was probably done by some dumba$$ kids. Being a vegan means do no harm. Well they missed the point. This hurt a lot of people.  Believe me THIS is NOT how real vegans act. We are just like everyone else, except we don't eat animals. Its that simple.

Even though I think the art actually looks pretty good. That is beside the point.

Somebody should paint a Golden Arches over a vegan restaurant's sign with the word "payback" added to it.

So sad this has all turned into political mud slinging. I love art, don't like McDonald's and can't believe some of the posts I've read on this blog. By the way, I killed a tomato this morning and fried some Bacon :)

Why was a corporate image a "beloved" mural in Huntington Beach? As a Huntington Beach resident, I am thrilled that a socially-conscious artist took to the streets, specifically commenting on this consumer image. Why label street artists "fly by night cowards"? What happened to social protest?

I think it was ridiculous to completely paint over the mural. As others have stated, most of it was still there.  They would have just needed someone to repaint the pier, grass & feet. Great reactionary response McDonald's!  Were they just looking for an excuse to paint over it?

Thanks Gustavo and Chris for this article. I'm really sad that they painted over the wall. They could have easily saved the top part and recreated the bottom. The artist was my father and although he painted many murals across California, this one was his pride and joy. It makes me extremely sad to see it gone..

It's funny...no one knows for sure that it was a vegan who did this. All this judgment and it's usually assumed that vegans are the judgmental ones.

I, for one, think the mural is much MUCH more beautiful with the VEGAN splashed in bold print. It symbolizes the downtrodden and the marginalization (non-humans) standing up against corporate propaganda and indoctrination. People who value those characters the the McDonalds brand need some serious deprogramming.

I am vegan and I would NEVER do anything like this, nor condone it.

Some vegans are really radical and attract a lot of negative attention. They are the loudest. The majority, like myself, do not preach, throw fake blood, ruin murals or try to push my opinions on other people.

So thank you, JERKFACE that did this. Thanks for being perpetuating the terrible image that the rest of us have to deal with. I hope the cops find you, put you in jail, and make you eat a HAMBURGER. yeah, I am vegan and I just said that.

I liked that mural mostly because above it in giant letters made of lights it said "LIQUOR". Also, isn't the McDonalds torn down now?

You guys are all complaining about Militant Vegans forcing their opinions and beliefs down your faces. When in reality, society as a whole and media forces their opinions on them. They got the message across, so what? maybe you'll actually think about what the fuck you're eating and how Mcdonalds is actually a shit hole.

I would like to know if there is any way I can help in the re painting of the mural.  I'll be home from school in December. I grew up with the mural and it makes me really sad to see this happen to it.

I can't begin to explain how annoying this is to me. This is right by my home and though I was young I do remember when this was painted. Not only is it art that has been made part of Huntington Beach history, it symbolizes what Ronald McDonald was all about - the kids. Go ahead hate the food if you must but don't forget Ronald McDonald charities help millions of kids each year. Its like the vandals completely missed that fact in their war against processed or fast foods. Its like they assumed those characters don't mean anything to the children.  Its tacky, low and petty. They need to realize their cause is a lifestyle choice they have made. While it must be nice to be able to have time to make every piece of food you eat or pay extra for "organic" foods that is not an option for many Americans. I understand wanting to change major restaurants to make them healthier but vandalism is not the way to do it. Ruining good works of art is not the way to do it. Ruining the image of the characters whom mean so much to children in need is NOT the way to do it. Leave Ronald McDonald and his friends alone.

To the vegans that did this, let it be known that I will be eating a McDonald's hamburger everyday, leaving half of the burger uneaten, as a memorial of what they ruined. Be it known, vegan vandals, that your act will directly lead to an increase in consumption and waste of cows, and my development of type 2 diabetes. Thus indirectly leading to an increase in your health care premiums owing to my increased health care use! Remember you will soon have no choice but to have health insurance!

the mcdonalds painting still took up most of the wall not to mention the wall was still clean and nicely painted. the two messages are coexisting in is image and that itself makes it beautiful. "swampgift" is right the painting over of this wall WAS a pathetic act. they should have left it how it was in the image above. to say mcdonalds "had" to paint over it is ridiculous because you can still see all the characters. now its an ugly ordinarily dull wall

Vegans, you just lost me. Before you were mildly annoying attention whores, now you're assholes. Whoever did this, someday you will be ashamed of what you've done. You've offended a lot of good people and have only hurt your cause. The painting over of this mural was a pathetic act.

That's not likely to convert people to their cause. And, yes, I eat vegan meals sometimes.

Perhaps little kids enjoyed seeing the characters depicted in it? "Street Artists" - NO. "Vandals" - YES.

@Skut "live and let live" is an interesting choice of phrasing here. That's exactly why people are vegan. We just want to let everyone live. Think vegans ram their choices down other people's throats? I've never seen a vegan commercial on tv, but I've probably seen a million McD's commercials. The funny thing is that you think you're making your own choices... but you're just a drone following the marketing. I wish there was a way to make marketing just VANISH so that people could actually make their own choices, then we could have a real discussion on the topic.

@Skut It is not right to say us vegans should just vanish. A select group of people did this,so saying all vegans should vanish is a bit extreme, would you not say? I could say the same about meat eaters, animal suffer and then are killed to be eaten! I would say animals are more inportant then a mural, but I will have to say what was done here was wrong!

@Skut I don't see how the two are related except for fanatics trying to tell me how to live my life.  Conservatives are just as bad with their evangelism.  I don't want to read scripture on my chicken sandwiches either.  Bottom line, an artist spent time creating a mural for kids and a bunch of twits destroyed it.  This McDonalds is right behind my parents house!!!!!!!!! I hope the cops catch these vandals.

I think you're being too harsh.  Think of all the charities that vegans have set up to help children.  How about all the charitble work vegan organizations have performed to help the less fortunate.  It's okay if some fringe vegan group defaces some corporate property because that is what it takes to raise awareness.  And can't we all agree that raising awareness is so important to raising awareness?  Really, you should reconisder your position, while enjoying a nice rib eye.  I know I will.

@liassez-faire The vandalism is not *beautiful* in any way. It was simply arrogant and thoughtless. Better to start over than let them have their way.

@fivecrackers  You're right..........I'm sure there are good, non confortational vegans........but, every vegan I've ever come in contact with has tried to get me to try their lifestyle..........I'm sick of it.........I have never suggested to anyone  including vegans that they should try eating meat.........I could care less what people eat.............

fivecrackers

@Skut I would not care what people eat either if suffering was not a part of it! Have you ever really looked in to how these animals are cared for before they are slaughtered? From birth till death? It is awful! This is why I care! I love animals! We don't need meat to survive!
