No. 13: Any Octopus Dish at Broadway By Amar Santana

No, I don't have a picture of the dish. If you'd ever tried to take a photo in that restaurant, you'd understand why.
The first time I ever went to Broadway by Amar Santana was on a double date with Gustavo and his chica. I mostly wanted to drink, and I ordered something or other off the menu without really thinking too hard about it.

Then the enormous, far-too-large-for-the-tiny-table plate was placed in front of me, I sliced off a piece of charred-black octopus a la plancha, put it in my mouth, and suddenly the room dimmed, the roaring conversation muted, and angels sang "Canta, aucell aimat" in my ears. Okay, not really, but it is to this day the best octopus I have ever had. Is it bad that I don't remember how it was cooked? I think it was al mojo de ajo, because I remember drowning the garlic breath in several of Gabrielle Dion's cocktails--and really, that's all I remember; Gustavo drove.

I went a second time and had it prepared differently, braised and served with yogurt and olives and more classic Greek flavors, and it was still an amazing dish. Never mind the rubber bands you've been served in the guise of scungilli; apparently Santana spent all that time at Charlie Palmer perfecting octopus.

There isn't currently an octopus dish on the menu, sadly; octopodes come and go according to their availability and the chef's whim, so keep checking... and keep utzing them to bring it back, because there's a reason someone as picky as I am made this number 13 on a list of 100.
