The Udder Type Of Dairy: Camel Milking Arrives At The OC Fair

It's a sight you never knew was missing from your life: frothy, white liquid shooting out from the udders of a camel. But as luck would have it, you can see this unique occurrence at the OC Fair.
From now until Aug. 12, camel milking demonstrations are taking place in the fair's livestock section. Folks from San Diego County-based Oasis Camel Dairy squeeze teat three times daily to promote the beverage's nutritional properties and show and awesome the hump-backed mammals can be.
While rather salty and watery, camel's milk boasts an array of reported health benefits. It's lower in fat and cholesterol than cow's milk, and contains five times as much vitamin C. Studies have shown that it contains high levels of insulin, which can benefit those with Type 2 diabetes. The drink is also reputed to help those with conditions ranging from autism to Crohn's disease.
California, however, does not currently allow the sale of raw camel milk, so the farm is working with the USDA to convert the property to a Grade "A" Dairy Farm to produce and market the product.
The demonstrations take place at 1:30, 3:30, and 5:30 p.m.
