ORIGINAL POST, JULY 24, 11 A.M: In response to the owner of Chick-Fil-A's public opposition to same-sex marriage, the youth wing of the Gay and Lesbian Services Center of Orange County plans to protest the fast food chain's newest grand opening in Laguna Hills this Thursday, July 26.

"Basically the goal of the protest is to simply educate the community," said Laura Kanter, director of youth services at the center. She told OC Weekly that members of Youth Empowered to Act will hold signs and pass out informational flyers early morning at the opening, where the first 100 customers in line will receive a free year's supply of Chick-Fil-A.

"[We're going] to let people know where that money is being spent," said Kanter of the flyers, which list a number of anti-gay marriage causes that Chick-Fil-A funds with donations. The chain has reportedly donated nearly $2 million to anti-gay groups in 2010 alone, according to Equality Matters, an LGBT advocacy group.

Several other organizations will protest alongside YETA, including Pacific Shores NOW, Gay Neighbors, and Families and Friends of Santa Ana. According to the group's press release, they're also trying to look for and promote LGBT-friendly restaurants near the new Chick-Fil-A location.

The fast-service chicken chain has recently experienced an uptick in growth, particularly in California, where it has 49 locations--15 of which are in Orange County, including its most recent Laguna Hills site.

Last week, Cathy told the Baptist Press that he was "guilty as charged" when asked whether his company had an established position against same-sex marriage. That statement cost his chain ties with The Jim Henson Company, and support from Boston Mayor Thomas Menino who won't allow Chick-Fil-A to open a restaurant in the city.

And the protests are bound to continue with LGBT activists planning a National Same Sex Kiss Day at Chick-Fil-A restaurants across the country on Friday, August 3.
