Let Us Now Praise Del Taco's Bean-and-Cheese Burritos

Del Taco burrito off the 405!!!

The Weekly World Headquarters is at a culinarily fortuitous place--near the LAB and CAMP holdings, not that far away from Rick's Atomic Cafe, basically across the street from Wafu of Japan, and so on. But when I need a quick bite--when I'm not going to meet a source or have a pep talk with a staffer--I find myself walking down Red Hill toward Del Taco for a simple-yet-filling-and-magnificent bean-and-cheese burrito.
Let's admit it, folks: Its simple burrito--not something mucked up with guac or beef or sour cream, just beans, melted yellow cheese, and red or green sauce--is as brilliantly Mexi as Zapata. It reminds me of the burritos I grew up with: just a flour tortilla, beans redolent of the refried tang, the creaminess of the cheese . . . and that's it. The sauce? Nothing more than a slight pique of the senses. Meat? Nah. Tortilla? Just the vessel for something filling, something comforting. Del Taco should make a special so that all itl'll cost you is a buck after tax, but what are you going to do. . . .

In the meanwhile: Del Taco's bean-and-cheese burrito, the ultimate fast food, done in about a minute, about $1.07 and worth not only every penny, but also more. Love 'em, and never leave them in a pinch--POUND SAND, TACO BELL!!!

I too like the Del Taco 99ers,  something about the cheddar, slightly rubbery tortilla, and del scorcho, it is really a nice combo!  On an aside, I think the freeway that frames the burrito is in fact the 73, but wonkishness notwithstanding I appreciate this article and this rag.

And here I thought I was the only one with this guilty pleasure.

I hate it when trucks drive in the left lane.

Del's 1/2 bean & cheese is the best value out there with great taste to boot.

I agree. Make mine with green sauce.

Years ago in another time and Galaxy I used to work at Del Taco in OC, when it was us high school kids working there.  I will always remember this British Tourist couple coming in and ordering a few items to try as they did not know what it was.  After eating it, they told me that they really liked this "bean burrito" item but could not figure out why we wrapped it up in a paper plate.  I laughed my butt off after I figured out they were refering to the overcooked tortilla that the taco bar guy had wrapped it with.  Needless to say, we gave them another one to try, but albeit one with a soft tortilla and not overcooked!!

Del Taco is a godsend for migrants from Texas who miss [the various offerings] there.  It was my delight to discover these joints around Portland.  And fries with that!  Yessir!  Their big national competitor's food tastes weird and makes my stomach hurt.

I have to agree. For the money, it's the best value on the street and keeping people from starving too.

Their burrito is awesome! I like to put it in my girlfriends snatch and slowly eat it out. There are even leftovers the next day if I'm hungry...

With green AND red sauce and onions. SO good! With that inferno sauce!

Next time you order one, ask them to "go bold". They put fries in the burrito and add in some kind of white wanna-be crema fesca sauce that is delicious. DO IT!

Sounds like it is probably the white sauce they put on the chicken tacos, sounds quite tasty...

The Green Sauce is where it's at. I ask for extra green sauce cause I don't want any of the burrito to be sauce-less and I tear away the top bean-less tortilla like the top of a ketchup foil pack.

The Del Taco Bean & Cheese burrito is the best tasting, overlooked, cheap eat in the OC. 2nd would be Jack-In-the-Box's "tacos".

On a separate note, I'd like to give kudos to Gus for not using any big fancy words when writing this article. We're talking bean & cheese burritos after all.

I love this burrito. Simple, tasty, and better than anything on Taco Bell's menu. I'll have that over that stupid Dorito taco any day! Damn, now I want one....THANKS GUSTAVO! ;)

Agreed.  About an hour ago, I was in "I'll just grab something quick from whatever is nearby" mode (very rare as I'm usually a "hold on, we can't eat until I check out reviews from every restaurant within a 100 mile radius" type of guy).  Just as I thought that, I saw Taco Bell. I figured I'd try the Dorito Taco and also ordered a Mexican Pizza and a Burrito Supreme.

Yes, I was hungry and yes, I ate it all, but it was one of the most unenjoyable meals I've had in a long time.  And yeah, the burrito was the worst part.  Something about the tortilla seems...I can't even think of how to describe it.  It has a quality that makes it stick to the wrapper, like it's uncooked or something.  And the filling tastes like someone mixed a bunch of leftovers (including the lettuce) and nuked it, but just enough to make it lukewarm.

Now Del Taco burritos are nothing to write home about and I'd much rather hit up a decent taqueria, but if it's convenient and you stick with the bean (or egg and cheese) burritos, I agree with Jamie - better than anything Taco Bell has to offer.

PS.  I had to scroll back up after reading the article to make sure it was written by Gustavo.  I'm used to him writing about more off-the-beaten-path type of places (but understood that this wasn't that type of article).

An ode dedicated to the bean burrito?

Thanks for CONFIRMING that the U.S. media's ability to engage in REAL journalism is FINISHED, DEAD, KAPUT.

Oh, and enjoy eating that burrito! Because at the rate that Obama is destroying jobs, pretty soon you'll be MAKING THEM for a living!

I was merely commenting on the fact that I'd MUCH rather enjoy reading about how BADLY Barack Hussein Obama is FUCKING the U.S. taxpayer in lieu of an insipid article about an insipid food item.

Priorities my friend. You should get yourself some.

Ah, the wonderful, Barack Hussein Obama moron. The moment someone calls our president that I tune them out, because I immediately know they are a biased dumbass.

have it your way (i'm guessing at), burrito king. you rule. but this humble servant would like to know what part of most caloric value per square bite YOU don't understand, given that i, myself, (presume not to) know exactly what it means to be a lowly (down-to-earth), suffering (empathetic), ignoramous (human being) such as yourself (invariably, unknown)...? maybe it would make more sense if i told you that i am a unemployed and barely passed high school. my platform IS no platform, and by no fault of my own, i can tell of no difference: funny/unfunny, quote/unquote, my order/class system. enlighten me.

This is actually about the only burrito I eat. And the value ones are better, somehow they come out with a perfect ingredient ratio.
