Not pink slime, but pink and slimy.
UPDATE: After the Pink Slime Uproar of 2012, the USDA will give school administrators the option of not feeding the stuff to children. The agency has confirmed that due to "customer demand," it will give schools in the National School Lunch Program a choice to order products with or without "Lean Finely Textured Beef" (aka the slime). It still maintains, however, that the ammonium hydroxide-treated meat is "safe, nutritious and affordable."

ORIGINAL POST: It had seemed that "pink slime"--the gross-out term for ammonium hydroxide-treated beef cuts--would die a slow, toxic death after McDonald's announced it was cutting it out of its products back in January

Nope. It's back. And this time, it will be served in school lunches.

The USDA plans to buy 7 million pounds of the slime (officially called Lean Beef Trimmings) for the national school lunch program, according to a report by tablet newspaper The Daily. In a statement, the department said that all of its ground beef purchases "meet the highest standard for food safety."

Ammonium hydroxide is added to beef scraps to kill off bacteria such as E. Coli. Beef Products Inc., which manufactures the ground beef, said in a statement that the chemical is a "natural compound" that's "widely used in the processing of numerous foods."

Tell that to Jamie Oliver and others who've crusaded against the not-quite-meat meat. A Change.org petition calls for the USDA to stop using pink slime in school food, stating "it is simply wrong to feed our children connective tissues and beef scraps that were, in the past, destined for use in pet food and rendering and were not considered fit for human consumption."

Christ... lets take the science over sensationalism here. It is a clean and healthy method of producing less waste as it uses every part of the cow. The ammonia in it keeps it clean and its FDA approved. There have been shown no adverse health effects.

Read up on it. Just read a little from an actual science journal or credible source. Its not fucking wrong that our children eat "connective tissues and beef scraps", its that kind of thinking that causes American's to ignore like 60% of the cow that other countries would never dream of putting to waste. We're not too good to eat the "naughty" parts of a cow.

It amazes me how the Consumer flocks to McDonald's like they do , because they have the worst tasting burgers based on every taste test giving across the country. They charge outragous prices for the discussting chicken nuggets which happens to be the topic of discussion with this pink SLIME, and I'm sure it cost McDonald's 2 cents to produce 20 nuggets but they charge the consumer 5 dollars...LOL !! Who ever is leading their Marketing campagine give that person an Outstanding employee of the Century award, because we all eat that CRAP on a daily bases. I'm so glad that my Children are all grown because there is no desire for me to ever step into a McDonald's again !!

Who runs America's government? Enemies of the U.S.? It's classic biological warfare. First GMO's invading the food chain in America and now attacking our kids with this crap? I'm just another nutty conspiracy theorist. This stuff isn't really happening. It's only real in my wild imaginings!

That's right hop!  We're not just farm animals that produce eggs and milk and the "farmer" is treating us like just that.  No way!  The big-chemical-snack corp would never invade our schools and feed the processed non-nutrition to anyone as innocent as children just to make a buck, would they?  Monsanto?  Never heard the name.  Who's that?  A new musical group from Hollywood?  This business of shoveling up cartilage and bone scrapings off the floor and feeding it to children could never happen in the "greatest country on earth".  No need for me to pay attention, I'll remain ignorant AND free at the same time, right?  Besides, I'm way too smart for anyone to put anything over on ME, right?  I'm "the greatest" and "the best" and "the smartest" to be sure!  Ok hop, we both should be about ready to throw up now, huh?  :o/

In principal, I agree with the opposition of consuming pink slime but we also have to look at the cold hard facts that world food production needs to be able to keep pace with population increases. World population is @7 billion now, projected to be over 9 billion by 2050. I see a very grim reality of almost all processed, GMO, chemically foods being consumed on a large scale by an overpopulated earth that cannot naturally sustain the human race.

Lemme get this straight:  Some school districts in OC won't let kids bring their lunch because of peanut allergies, but, instead, they feed them pink slime burgers?

Exactly what I was thinking! Homemade lunches are nixed in favor of mediocre cafeteria food loaded with empty calories and scary additives. :-(
