The Boston Globe has reported that McDonald's has started offering "cheese danish, two kinds of muffins, banana bread and vanilla scones" that are baked on the premises in stores in the New England area.

The new items were introduced today and are aimed to compete directly against Dunkin' Donuts, a formidable force in those parts.

Unlike its traditional breakfast line, the pastries will be available all day. Some McDonald's franchisees are hoping the new offerings will allow them to sell more coffee and also appeal to those who think the Egg McMuffin is just too heavy a meal to start the day.

No word on when or whether it will be offered nationwide.
