[UPDATE: Starbucks Responds] Starbucks Barista Draws Chink Eyes On Customers' Cups

Categories: Really?!?!?
Angry Asian Man
UPDATE, FEB. 9, 9:13 A.M.: Starbucks sent us this response regarding the incident:

"Starbucks does not tolerate discrimination of any kind and has a lengthy history of leading on and supporting policies that promote equality, inclusion and diversity. We were disappointed to hear of the poor experience this customer had in our store and have apologized to him several times. This experience is unacceptable and not indicative of the welcoming and respectful service we strive to offer our customers in our stores. The partner (employee) who was involved in this incident is no longer employed by Starbucks."

ORIGINAL POST, FEB 8, 12:21 P.M.: Heeeeere we go again.

Perhaps bored of spelling out names on drink cups, only to botch them, a Starbucks barista in Alpharetta, Georgia, decided to draw the customers instead. Bad, bad idea.

Oh look! It's the chink eye.

Yes, really.

Angry Asian Man reports that the two customers were Korean and not native English speakers. "They immediately complained to the store manager, who did not defend the drawings or offer some kind of bullshit explanation, but simply apologized," AAM writes.

And then the manager offered them gift cards.

Yes, gift cards. Because free Frapuccinos can take care of everything from messed-up orders to blatant racism.

First receipts (remember Chick-fil-A and Papa John's?), and now this. Are we really in 2012?

I am saddened by all these comments...why are we pointing fingers? Why are we against each other? Isn't the story about the insensitivity of a Starbucks worker in Paris toward Asians? Why aren't we against the bigotry and standing up toward for what’s right? What is it going to take for all of us to stop this type of intolerance? Is racism/society going backwards toward these issues?

It's two lines on a cup. How is that making "chink" eyes?

it seems maybe OC is the new alabama when it comes to racism.  it's everywhere!  even in the headlines.  idiots.

but do you realize that using the term "chinky" in the headline is just as racist?

FUCK STARBUCKS AND THE GREASY CHINK THEY RODE IN ON

Fredric Williams

Really? Who sent the response? When? The Starbuck's website makes no mention of this anywhere -- and no one else seems to have received a similar reponse. Did you talk to the manager of the store to determine if this event took place and if the individual was actually fired?

Passing along rumors -- stories not based on actual investigation and conversation with those directly involved -- contributes to the ignorance and hostility in the world. Bloggers need to learn the basics.

I remember in the 90's in Mississippi a group of black men went into a restaurant and were given extremely poor service.  They complained about discrimination and the owners thought they'd get away with denying it had happened.  Unfortunately for the owners, the men were Feds (Secret Service) and the settlement was expensive and publicity was very bad for the restaurant chain.

Why is drawing slanted eyes racism? Would drawing straight eyes be anti-non-Asian?

And what should they get?  A cool million?  Of course who is been typecast as a reporter.  You seem to have accepted the "Asian beat" for SFWeekly.  Clearly you aren't a real reporter dealing with real stories.  You are in the ghetto.  The equivalent of "chink eyes" on a frap cup.

HA!

These things always remind me of the time a Filipino worker at the dining facility at NAS Jax in Jacksonville FL called me a "Fucking Round Eye"  We laughed about that for months.  I still giggle to this day when I think about it.

Your words are all English, and they are strung together in a vaguely English-like pattern, but they don't make any sense at all in English. Please try your dribbling rant again later.

Wow, What a complete prick!   This is a food blog dude and its an amusing story?  What the hell do you want?

First of all, it's OC Weekly. Secondly—and most importantly, and really, the only thing you should take away from this comment—you're a pendejo.

The republican party has been a haven for racists for some time. They are out in the open with it now. The Koch's, Rove, Limbaugh, Murdoch, and all the others need to keep racism alive in order to form a base of support to get their republicans elected. Without republicans in office, the country would be solvent, prosperous, personal liberties would be better protected, and we'd be on course to be the ideal of all nations... this would also mean fair taxes for the super rich and other controls they do not want. Hatred is the glue that forms the republican base and that's why the fires of hatred is stoked by republican backers and leaders. Their elected leaders pander to the hatred of these voters in order to get elected and keep their base angry and galvanized. It's time someone said this out loud. Most of us already know it.

JZ

I'm sure that was really funny to you and your friends. And for some reason I bet there was more to that story. Was there a particular reason this Filipino worker called you that? I just read your posts and you come off as an insensitive prick (why am I not surprised by someone with a PBR logo for his profile pic). Just because your mom has sex with a black person and you have a latina fetish, doesn't mean it's ok for to you laugh when a starbucks employee acts with blatant racism.

You may be a little off with the Hong Kong Dave, they still have Chinese only restaurants and bars.  I mentioned a couple months ago that I tried to go into one on my last trip to Hong Kong back in 98 and was promptly escorted out.

Bozo

But drawing eyes is same as writing "Asian" or "non-Asian", which is just the fact (and  not an unflattering fact),

Ryan H

I'd also like to add something regarding your comment.  How do you blame Republicans for the solvency of this Country?  If i'm not mistaken, Democrats had a FULL MAJORITY, in the House, Senate, and White House for 2 Years.  They had Carte Blanche authority to pass whatever Budget, Bill,  or Resolution that they wanted. Instead, Obama has been the President of "Executive Orders", and "Special Tzars".  All in line to perpetuate his Socialist agenda.

Ryan H
Ryan H

Can you give us some examples of GOP racism?  I'd like to see what you're basing that comment on.  Also, what do you think about Black Republicans, who espouse personal achievement and responsibility?  Are they betraying their race?  In my opinion, no.

If i'm correct, this post started about someone drawing Asian eyes on a cup.  I think we're all agreed that it was inappropriate, and wrong.  To make a statement about a large segment of the population,(Republicans) based on that incident, is just wrong.  We can get into it about which Party is the most giving and compassionate, but the Repubs will win, hands down.  I base that on charitable contributions, religious outreaching, and volunteering efforts.  Do some research, not all volunteering and charitable efforts are conducted by the Susan Komen Foundation.

Yeah, you are so far off base its ridiculous...

I'm not even going to rehash the deal with the civil rights act of 1964 and who did and didn't support it and or what party EVERY southern governor was during the freedom rides or the marches... Or what President sent troops to a southern state to enforce integration. Or that fact that it was the democrats that introduced every entitlement program that is bankrupting the state and country...

You know who the racists are?  The people who tell you that your your place in life is predetermined and that because you may be a minority you will never get ahead because the man will bring you down and you might as well just be content and nuzzle up to the teet of public assistance.

909Jeff
909Jeff

See typical response... It cant POSSIBLY be the Asian persons fault it HAS to be something that the dastardly white guy did... Its the only reasonable explanation... in which case its okay that THEY make a racist remark because you asked for it!

Is that what your're trying to say?

Oh and as far as the name and the pbr logo... I use them to uncover racists like you who make preconceived notions about a whitey who currently lives in the IE...  Thank you for playing my game.

And yes because my life in so tightly intertwined with minorities I do have the liberty to laugh about stupid situations... Mostly because I know how my friends and family feel about me... And thats all that matters... Other than that I don't give a flaming rats ass about you or what you think about me!

Or you just learn not to let what ignorant people say ruin your day... Perhaps I was conditioned from a young age not to pay attention when some kids called me nigger lover because my Step dad is black.

Or when my former friend who I grew up with asked me why I dont date white girls because I had an affinity towards Latinas which is why I married one.

Yeah my life was plagued with "white problems"...

9-9-9PlanJeff, don't you believe in American exceptionalism?  Why would you want American business to adopt the same practices as Hong Kong?

NativeGaijin

Bozo, do you know why Starbucks baristas write on the cups in the first place? The primary reason is so that orders don't get mixed up, but it's also to "personalize" the experience as much as possible. That's why 99.9999% of the time, it's the customer's NAME that's written. Sometimes, baristas will also write cute greetings or messages as well, which makes the customer feel like they are welcome there. Drawing the slant eyes on the cup basically implies that the customer's name wasn't even worth learning because their being Asian was all that information they needed. It doesn't matter if it's true that they were Asian. The act reduces a customer from a person to a "type." It's the equivalent of drawing a fat person on the cup of an overweight customer. Even if it's true that the customer is fat, drawing it on the cup would still be unacceptable. Or do you think otherwise? If so, I'd love to hear your rationale.

909Jeff
909Jeff

Joan, I never said anything about the cups... I mentioned that it kinda reminds me about the time that I was called a fucking round eye by a Filipino which didn't hurt my feelings in fact I thought it was funny.  And whats the response from Mike and JZ? 1) it must of been my fault... 2) what a luxurious life you have lead being white etc... Look at JZ he even made presuppositions about me because I claim to be white I currently live in the IE and I put up a pic of the pbr logo... He made it up in his mind that I was some hillbilly yokel from podunk riverside... which in and of itself is the manifestation of racist thoughts.  Then makes nasty comments about my Mother and Wife.

But I thank you that in the face of all of this you still thinks its only "Possible" that in my "Opinion" there can still be racism against whites.  Troll the message boards a little more and your see that us "Gabacho's" are the favorite target of a certain columnist and his minion love to come on and make outlandish racist comments about whites.

Joan
Joan

I respect your opinion that it is possible to be racist against whites.  I just wish you would respect the opinion of those who think that drawing chinkeyes on a frappucino cup is not  funny, and in fact is pretty nasty.

909Jeff
909Jeff

You know what Mike? Youre right. In the sense that I never call people names when I argue, and it certainly wasn't my intent to call you an idiot but to attack your line of reasoning.  Based on your complex argument structure and your attempt to sneak in a very well placed logical fallacy that would have nailed most people, that tells me that your a fairly smart fellow.  This is just a topic that we will not apparently ever agree on.  But none the less it was good matching wits with you!

Mike
Mike

huge difference.  they're not discriminating against your race, they're helping their own race. if you've been to asia then you know they love white people.  but those koreans and chinese are dead wrong.  trust me, i know how f'd up asians can be too.  prejudice is rampant.

you call everything i've said idiotic but that's such a huge cop out.  if you've noticed, i didn't insult you even once even though you came up with the lamest examples of how you've felt the "pain" too.  and the fact that you're so idiotic that you don't realize that you empathize with your latina wife and black step-father when they experience racism but not with the asians that have slants drawn on their cups to identify them.

909Jeff
909Jeff

"and i'm 100% certain that the koreans didn't serve you because you were white but because the other customers were korean.  same with the chinese that kicked you out.  very arrogant of you to think that."

Translated;

No.... they didn't seat you first and take your order last because you're white... Noooo they did because the other people are ALSO Korean.... The Chinese people in Hong Kong who kicked you out of that Chinese only place didn't do it because you were white.... Noooooo its because you weren't Chinese ALSO.

Whats the difference? I'm quite certain if I gave preferential treatment to someone because they were white you'd be the first one screaming racism.

That was quite possibly the most idiotic attempt to rationalize racism against white people I have ever heard.  And you write it off as arrogance... It would be arrogant if I let petty shit like that bother me!

So at this point I bid you, your double standard and your idiotic rationalization... adieu!

Mike
Mike

i think you're confusing empathy with experience. not the same.  by institutionalized i mean all the stereotypes and prejudices that the media, the schools, the government, all the institutions have tried to ingrain in us.   i didn't think you were a hillbilly from wherever.  you were just the guy laughing at the asian dude for calling you round eye.

i'm not sure why you can't explain why those things are funny.  but let me put these things in a way you can understand.  let's say you were a black man.  would you be able to walk into a restaurant, get served last because of your race and still be able to laugh about that?  how about if someone called you "fucking big lips" at the airport.  would you laugh about that too?  no.  do you think black people are insecure and take themselves too seriously as well????

and i'm 100% certain that the koreans didn't serve you because you were white but because the other customers were korean.  same with the chinese that kicked you out.  very arrogant of you to think that.

909Jeff
909Jeff

Mike, Carefully go back and read your rant and see how irrational you're being...

What do you want me to say?  That because I'm white I didn't feel the real sting of racism because the man who raised from the time I was four is black and we lived in HB? Do you have any idea how a black man in HB in the late 70's to mid 80's may have been treated? Or his traitor wife and her kid?

Or if someone calls my wife a beaner or a taco bender? That doesn't affect me huh, because I live an isolated sheltered honkey life?  there is a better than 50% chance my wife will come home from work today and had to deal with an irate client who didn't feel comfortable working with a "Hispanic" person...  Oooops... Sorry dear, you'll just have to deal with it because Mike told me I cant relate!  Your assertion is completely asinine!

Your perspective needs serious adjustment.  You obviously take yourself way to serious and are very insecure.  Take account of who your real friends are and don't worry about the ignorant idiots who make racist remarks... You don't want them as friends anyway.

The reason I am able to laugh about is because it was FUNNY! there is no other deep seated cause.  The reason I laughed when I was in Hong Kong and was kicked out of a Chinese only place was because it was FUNNY.  The reason why I can laugh when i go to my local Korean bbq place and they blatantly serve the Korean customers first is because its FUNNY!  I know you want to flip it and make it seem that I'm racist for laughing at the silly little Asians who were just standing up to the big mean white devil but that's not the case at all.

Not sure what you were getting at with the institutionalized thing?  Was I in prison or something is that what you're saying?

Bottom line is you made a stupid comment about what you thought was a cracker hillbilly from the IE... And now you feel dumb and have to defend yourself.  Its cool I dont hold it against you.

Mike
Mike

being called a "nigger lover" is so miniscule to actually being called a "nigger".  try being prejudiced against your whole life and laughing about it when another "incident" occurs.  it doesn't work like that.  and then people complain about minorities being too sensitive.  they just have no idea because they can only relate it to the few times some stuff went on with them.

the insults against you weren't about who you were inherently but against your circumstances.  it's a huge difference.  do you understand why you can laugh when someone calls you round eye and an asian can't laugh when someone calls them slant eye?  if you can, then you're just touching the surface.  and if you can put into words why being called round eye is funny to you then we can get to the bottom of this.  my guess is institutionalized prejudice.

and why do people always come back with their experiences with minorities to prove that they're not racist?  it's a reflex response. i met a woman the other day who adopted an asian baby.  she obviously felt like she wasn't racist but the way she talked about her cute, beautiful asian baby...  she didn't adopt a baby, she bought a doll.  complete de-humanization and objectification.  she was a very nice lady but completely racist and clueless.
