How do you know that mobile phone cooking apps have moved on from geek novelties to legitimate resources people actually use? When The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, a competition which has been honoring the best in cookbooks since 1995, creates a special category for them in this year's competition.

For the first time ever, four apps have been nominated to vie for the top prize. They are: Larousse Cuisine; Jamie Oliver 20 Minute Meals; Wikitapas; and Baking with Dorie by Dorie Greenspan. Winners will be announced in a lavish ceremony on March 6 at Folies Bergere in Paris.

Past winners for cookbooks in their traditional form have included Nathan Myhrvold for his Modernist Cuisine book and Eric Ripert.
