Five Ballsy In-N-Out Copycats

In-N-Out
See that trademark logo? Anybody?
Trademark lawyers for Irvine-based In-N-Out are busy folks. The iconic burger chain has spawned ripoffs across the world--and that means war.

But the company is smart and understands that where there's a clone, there's a hungry market. In response to a fake In-N-Out opening in Shanghai, the real In-N-Out is not only taking legal action, but also gauging local interest in the authentic product. Serious Eats reports that California chefs flew to China to serve the famous cheeseburgers and Double-Doubles at a recent pop-up event. Will Asia be getting an In-N-Out before, say, New York City? Nobody knows for sure, though that would be funny.

Here are five ballsy In-N-Out copycats we've seen over the years -- a reminder of how nice it is to have the real thing in our back yard!

1. Chadder's

Utah Gossip
At this restaurant in American Fork, Utah, there are too many In-N-Out similarities to name. The red-and-white-tiled walls. The menu items: Double-Double (which was later changed to "Stubby Double"), animal-style, protein-style. The food served in cardboard boxes on red trays! In-N-Out sued in 2007 -- and won. By 2009, a real In-N-Out opened less than a mile from Chadder's, putting the clone out of business. Booyah.

2. Nicky's In-N-Out

Court documents
While it wasn't a burger joint, this Chicago-based copycat used In-N-Out's yellow arrow and name (!). In-N-Out settled a trademark lawsuit in 2009.

Some may consider imitation as the highest form of compliment bu this may not be ideal in the food business. Most likely, all it will take are the best people to work in a restaurant but it will be better if you can come up with original recipes that the people will love.

The hell with imitation INOs -- we've got imitation food critics right here at the Weakly, and their stories are always pointing downward!

Why is it that at In-N-Out, the kitchen is full of nothing but hueros. Yet you go to any other fast food joint (national or local joint) and its all raza?

Hey look, white American teens and early twenties doing a "job Americans won't do" here in SoCal--except, ironically, at a real In-N-Out.

Puleeeeeeeze.  We just got rid of that I&O apologist at the Register and now this?

I won't eat anywhere that's stupid enough to put Jesus quotes on my food...for christ's sake.

Yeah, In-n-Out invented the colors red and white!

Only if you eat them more than 15 minutes after they are cooked. Pryor to that they are great after that they turn to crap. One of the pitfalls of making them fresh.

@TheRefriedMexican You're wrong, In-N-Out hires all colors.

@20ftJesus I don't care what they put on the cups or bags. In-N-Out pays their employees much, much higher wages then any fast food company along with other benefits including healthcare, dental and eye care, pensions, etc. It's fine company that treats both it's employees and customers with respect. Like the book "Fast Food Nation" pointed out and I'm paraphrasing, "In-N-Out proves one can pay their employees well, run a spotless restaurant, serve a quality at a very fair price and still make money."

I don't go to church but at least this company actually practices what they preach so I'm good with what ever bible passages they want to put on some of their packaging. You can hardly notice this information unless you're really looking for it. Very tiny letters at the base of their cups and such.. I ate there for a decade before I someone pointed this out they had added this. The bible passages were added by one son in later years. Keep in mind In-N-Out opened it's first location in 1948.

One down, thirty+ apologists to go at the good ol' Register.

/The apologists there mainly drag their knuckles in the real estate section.

//Now is the best time to buy!!!

///They're not building any more land!!!

////Blah blah blah....

Dude, it's like on the bottom of the cup -- you have to go out of your way to see them.

@mitch young You're right. I believe the bible passages were added in the 80's  No big deal. They're a great company who serve the best burgers on the planet and pay their employees well. Listen up McDonalds.

I'll throw in Walmart while I'm at it even if they don't serve burgers. Or do they now? No matter, they still suck. Terrible company.

Do they hire Jewish lawyers to file these copyright suits as to avoid the whole turn-the-other-cheek thingy in Matt 5:39?
