The Viking Truck: New Corn Dog Food Truck Debuts

Pardon my triteness: If I had a nickel for every time I accidentally stumbled upon a new food truck on the road on the day of its debut, I'd have exactly 10 cents. It happened with Sexy Burger a few weeks ago. And on the way to dinner last night, it happened again: I saw the truck pictured above on the 22 freeway. It was either headed to or coming from Bootlegger's Brewery, where, I found out later, it had its first day of service, giving food away during a test run.

Its Facebook indicates the truck specializes in "sausages, corn dogs and Tots, all with a little Viking attitude," but the corndog the Viking character wields like a weapon suggests it hopes to make its mark with batter-dipped, deep-fried wieners on a stick. How does it all relate to the Scandinavian mascot? Beats me. What does a clown have to do with hamburgers?

More intriguing is the corn dog angle. I've always wished Disneyland's corn dog truck would take it to the streets. If there's a missing link in the food-truck genre (tacos and grilled cheese are covered, people!), it's corn dogs. So please, let it be like Disneyland's, using the all-beef hot dogs before the company changed it, covered 'neath the gnarled, grotesque sheath of crispy batter that made it as big as a toddler's arm.

I stumbled on the grand opening last weekend when I went to Bootleggers for a few drinks and Football. They said the food was free so I figured "Why not". I tried to sample a little of everything on the menu. Apparently they had run out of Tots. But I did see someone chowing down on the chilli cheese tots topped with sour cream. They looked unbelievable. Throw a little diced green and white onions and you have a winner in my book. I don't remember the names of the food items for what my friends and I got. But it was like "The Thunder Dog" and "The Oden". Mine was a GIANT brawt topped with ham and some spicy ketchup and mustard, all stuffed in a massive bun. It was really good. Afterward I asked about the corn dogs and they said they could make a regular corn dog or a brawt dog. I had the regular one and the home made batter was like something I've seen before. It was like something straight out of the County Fair with all the deep fried batter-y goodness covering it. All in all, even though the food was free, I still tipped them a 20$. Money well spent in my opinion. Highly recommended.

The Viking Truck will be in Westminster on Saturday, October 22nd at Sigler Park, 7200 Plaza St. from 10:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.The city will hold their annual Founder's Day Parade at 9:00 a.m. and host a Food Truck Mini Fest at 10:30 a.m.

What a niche idea for a truck! Definitely worth checking out if they have a good corn dog.

"The Viking Truck" eh? Hope the corndoggers find their way to Long Beach City College at lunchtime sometime soon. Besides the fact they'd probably be a hit, LBCC's sports teams are all known as the Vikings.

I'm not big on corn dogs, but I wish these people the very best of luck on their venture.......Someone needs to find a way to FIND all these great FOOD TRUCKS day to day!!!!
