No. 29: Cheeseburger at TK Burgers

Welcome to the Weekly's list of our 100 Favorite Dishes for 2011. Tune in every day until we get to número uno! Now, on to the latest entry.

As I note here about every third sentence, I'm an Anaheim boy, which means I never experienced TK Burgers until enrolling at Orange Coast College in the late 1990s. The burgers of my youth and teens, then were spent between Carl's (back when they could grill a mean steamed ham) and In-n-Out, with an occasional foray to Brea's Best. But ever since I first had a TK cheeseburger, I've never stopped eating them.

My ultimate write-up for the chain (yeah, and it's a chain, but it's still ours, damnit) is here, so let me just add this: the bun. Crispy, eggy, solid, yet soft. Soaks up their secret sauce and the juices of the patty. Grilled just so. This is not a gourmet burger--it's a chain burger, which means you'll get it quick. And yet that little detail makes TK my favorite burger in the county, and one of the few places I visit twice a week. The others? Details to come...

Kuya Gustavo, is there any way you can edit this post to expunge your (admittedly bad) iPhone photography skills and replace the image with something more representative of the very appetizing burgers served by TK?  I mean, really, the one in this pic looks as flat as that gal I dated from Bolsa Avenue before she went to that smiling Persian surgeon.  The meat is barely visible, you can't see the dressing, and the bun has a crack in it that could render it perceived as being stale.

Dial the Weekly's Photo Librarian, or steal a pic from that Monster Munching blog.

Little known fact but I was the first customer ever at the first TK Burgers ever and it was totally unplanned and I think it was in the mid-1990s so I don't think you missed it by much.

I'm curious, was the first one the one in Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, or the Costa Mesa one on 19th Street?   My recollection is it's one of the Beach-es

The one across PCH from the HB Pier. I was down there for some reason and needed a bite to eat and thought about going to the Dairy Queen (might still have been the Jack in the Box then) but saw a smaller hamburger shop next to it so I walked into there. Whoever was working there said, "Whoa, how did you even know to come here? We just opened and it's our first day and you're our first customer." It wasn't something I was planning on doing.

Actually, the one in Newport near the pier is the first TK's.
