No. 15: Chilaquiles at Taqueria Zamora

You'll have noticed we're changing who writes this feature on a day-by-day basis: this is how you know we're getting close to the end of our countdown. Make sure to pick up a copy of our Best of OC 2011 when it hits the newsstands October 14!

Faithful readers will remember the epic battle between the county's best chilaquiles--those at Amorelia Cafe in Costa Mesa, and the ones offered by Taquería Zamora in big, bad SanTana. Amorelia won by the slightest of margins, but they don't get the vote for this list: here, we're talking about our favorite dishes, and it's the chilaquiles that Zamora sells that I eat weekly.

From what I wrote earlier this year:

The chilaquiles here actually commit my most cardinal sin for the meal--the tortilla strips are soft, only slightly crisped. But these aren't any mere tortillas, of course: Zamora's masa monsters are among the largest corn tortillas you'll ever see, magazine-thick and reeking of just-cooked masa, that earthy smell that has intoxicated the Americas for generations. The beans and rice taste of the rancho, the salsas (red or green, per you choice) tingle but don't burn--that's the job of the mini-molcajete of salsa de chile de árbol sitting at every table. Add the fact that Zamora also gives you four tortillas and chips and beans-and-cheese as a dip and there's dried chiles on the side, and it makes the best chilaquiles package in the county.

It's that package that continues to call me--hell, I just ate some earlier this week and am still full but STILL want more. And that, o my brothers, is the stuff that favorite meals are built from.

Hey, I put in the address—not my fault our website is acting screwy at the moment.

As for prices? Nah...

Hey, you win either way—AND you remind us that, despite some knowledge of food, you're a pendejo supreme!

Always the victim.

BTW, that Amorelia looks good and the price is cheaper than Zamora; so, I think I'll give it the first try.  (Plus, it's not in SA, which is a BIG PLUS.)
