No. 23: ABC Burger at Peter's Gourmade Grill

gourmadeabcburger.jpg

When Peter's Gourmade Grill opened last year, they staked a sign into the lawn across the off-ramp of the 55 freeway. The sign steered you toward a gas station, which just happens to host a terrific, if oddball, take-out restaurant.

The first thing I ever tried in the early days of the restaurant, the avocado, bacon and cheddar burger, is still my favorite among a small sandwich menu. That you're eating at a gas station is the fun, novel part. But the burger that comes out of that tiny kitchen is better than many, more conventional restaurants.

The rough-hewn look of the burger patty shows it's hand-formed, and not a frozen bulk patty. The nooks in a loosely-formed patty seem to hold those juices better. While the patty cooks on the flat-top, an infra-red broiler-arm contraption swings down to melt the white and yellow cheddar cheese. Some of the cheese melts ooey-gooey,  while other pieces crisp up on the hot, metal griddle, adding two kinds of cheese texture to your lunch.

The thick-sliced premium bacon adds chew and smoke to the shredded lettuce, fresh tomato, and diced, ripe avocado. All these components leak their juices into a sturdy bun that gladly absorbs them until your last, delicious bite.

I think his burgers are better than slaters but slaters has the whole package with all the sides and of course the full bar.

The Pastrami burger is also pretty ridiculous!

You can't get your car washed at Slater's, though.

You can't have your car washed at Break of Wind, either, yet you guys slobber all over them every year, as though taste and texture were mere marketing concepts.

Getting back to burgers, Peter's is OK but will seem like a quaint echo of our orange-grove past after Umami Burger slips into town next year. Umami is that rarest of all birds, a trendy LA corporation that actually delivers on the hype. Their burger is fabulous. Now all we have to do is get Denny's to hipster up with a bottle of Sriracha on every table, and it will be bye-bye, Break du Wind, bye-bye.

What you forget what makes Peter's Gourmade special is the story behind the grill. He was featured previously on an up and close interview. I like Slaters but I'll take Peter's ABC or Tuna melt or Turkey Mushroom with Greek fries or good ol' reg fries any day!

That you like Umami's overpriced, overseasoned crap says all we need to know about your laughable tastes—and that you're a hipster dimwit.
