No. 85: Comida Corrida at Taquería La Raza

Dave Lieberman
Welcome to the 2011 edition of Stick A Fork In It's 100 Favorite Dishes. We've just kicked off our countdown to #1 (which will appear the same week as our compendium on all that's good and right about Orange County).

Filling, nutritious lunches for cheap aren't just for schoolkids in Jamie Oliver's perfect world; in the guise of comida corrida, they're what keeps Mexico running. While comida corrida isn't as cheap in OC as it is in Mexico City, the concept is the same: a multi-course meal of soup or noodles, rice, and a main dish, served with tortillas.

Taquería La Raza, in a dusty, wind-swept stretch of Santa Ana, does it well: noodle soup with vegetables, tomatoey rice, fantastic handmade tortillas, and your choice of meats like chicharrones en roja (pictured) or costillas en verde (pork ribs in green sauce, sometimes with purslane), plus a side of beans, all for the princely sum of about $6.

Suck it, Subway.

Taquería La Raza, 925 W. Warner, Santa Ana; (714) 641-5142.

Is this the correct address?  Did they switch locations?  Just went today and the place was completely closed. Empty. Nada.  Was sooo looking forward to some good costillas en verde.
