No. 88: Chicago Dog at Chicago Harv's

chicagoharvs.jpg

Welcome to the 2011 edition of Stick A Fork In It's 100 Favorite Dishes. We've just kicked off our countdown to #1 (which will appear the same week as our compendium on all that's good and right about Orange County).

When it comes to pizza, I'm a through-and-through New York pizza kind of guy. Hot dogs? Well, while I love my dogs with brown mustard and sauerkraut, I have to give it up for Chicago's version of a tubesteak, with a Vienna Beef frank, a poppy seed roll, onions, yellow mustard, piccalilli, tomatoes, a pickle, celery salt and sport peppers. A New York dog like Nathan's eats like a snack; a Chicago dog eats like a meal.

While Portillo's in Buena Park, the first non-Chicagoland outpost of the In-N-Out of Chicago hot dogs, is the standard against which all comers are measured, I admit to a fondness for Chicago Harv's near Fullerton College. The place is small, the owners are friendly, and the dog is just as good as its more famous competition.

Click here for our 100 faves from 2010! The list so far this time around:

Hey Dave,

I don't know if it's just the picture that's wrong, but:1. No sport pepper;2. No big red tomato wedges;3. (Most serious of all) No neon-green relish. That dog in the picture would be a laughing-stock in Chicago.

I skipped the sport peppers (I always do, and they're optional anyway), the tomatoes are in there somewhere, and the neon-green relish is there and visible—look toward the left. Also, I suck at photography and wish I didn't have to lead each post with a photo.
