Northwood Pizza in Irvine To Close in June, Some Locals Not Happy

northwood.jpg
Normally, this would be a one-off post: a pizza parlor in Irvine is closing next month, its owners having decided to turn it into a new concept, a clone of The Boiling Crab called The Spicy Crab.

But this isn't a normal story. It seems that Northwood Pizza has some rabid loyalists who've taken it upon themselves to air their outrage on Facebook. They are upset that their go-to 30-year-old pizza joint is turning into a Cajun seafood place, an idea which one fan summarily dismissed with "blechhhhhhh..."

At last count there were three Facebook pages dedicated to it. One wants to save it, another thanks it, and the third calls for a peaceful sit-in during their last day of business. The latter encourages fans to "get together on the Saturday before, buy a small soda (so we can't get kicked out for loitering), and just not leave. No drama. No fights. Just awareness and memories."

But even within the fan page, there are dissenting voices. One poster commented, "If you liked it all so much...why didn't you go more often so it'll be profitable for them to keep it??? Capitalism and Darwinism at work here guys."

Another poster replied, "You're not helping. This page is called Save Northwood Pizza. Not 'state the obvious' page."

Thanks to Bill and Annette many kids have had a chance with their first job that lead them to full time careers. Know one knows the exact count of people who's life they touched, I would say ten's of thousands.  I was lucky enough to own a Northwood Pizza in BP. From that I have a nice life with a great family.  I want to sincerely thank Bill and Annette for the opportunity in this comment.  Thank You forever..  DC

I am so angry!  Bill and Annette worked thier whole life to create that place.  Generations have worked there as thier first job.  I know whole family's that have gone through that place through the years.  My brother, sister and myself worked there.  The reason it failed is because the new owner did not care one bit about the community of Northwood.  You can just through money at it and think you are going to make money.  I say we boycott the Yogurt place he owns a couple stores down to say thanks a lot for ruining a true defining pizza joint of Northwood.

It is so sad to see Northwood Pizza go. As the previous owner of Old World Liquor I considered Northwood Pizza as an institution, a great family place. I guess the change of demographics in Northwood did not help. I personally miss Bill and Annette.

What is it with Koreans and their desire to turn their backs on any sense of community for the pursuit of the almighty dollar? Hell, this is even reaching George Argyros levels of ignorance!

Great idea. Lets kill small business in our local community to help the economy.

The Spicy Crab? Wow, that's not even trying a little bit.

And Northwood Pizza is the apex of creative names I assume?

At least it's located in Northwood. Michelle is right—what a lazy name.

NWP brought together the diversity of Irvine at a place where there's room for everyone with the knowledge that "everyone eats pizza." Losing Northwood pizza isn't about losing great pizza, it's about the loss of traditions and a sense of community in Irvine.

This place is more about nostalgia for everyone who ditched class in high school to go eat there than it was about serving decent pizza. Far more significant to the Irvine food landscape is Ace Donut.

Edwin,

Nice Time Deli in Irvine is open under a new owner and I think it's some sort of dumpling house. The signage is only in Chinese now so I am guessing it's authentic. I saw people eating all kinds of dumplings in there and it was packed.

Please review these opening places you post about!
