Jamba Juice Jumps on the Green Smoothie Train (Plus, My Favorite Green Smoothie Recipe)

Jamba Juice
Jamba Juice, known for its fruity blended creations, is adding lettuce, carrots, broccoli, beets and algae to the mix. Yum.

The chain has introduced three Fruit & Veggie Smoothies, each packed with a hefty dose of that good-for-you stuff Mom always forced you to eat. Berry UpBeet blends strawberries and blueberries with juices from carrots, beets, broccoli and lettuce; Apple 'n Greens combines apple-strawberry juice, spirulina (a blue-green algae), peaches, mangoes and bananas, along with juices from dark, leafy, green vegetables, carrots and lettuce; and Orange Carrot Karma is a simple blend of carrot juice, orange juice, mangoes and bananas. All provide three servings of fruits and vegetables in each 16-ounce serving!

People are no longer saying eww to green smoothies, typically known as smoothies that contain leafy greens. They're nutrition powerhouses and, when blended with the right ingredients, surprisingly tasty. Naked Juice's "Green Machine" smoothie--infused with ingredients such as chlorella, barley grass, ginger, parsley and garlic--is a health-food favorite.

I was shocked by how un-gross green smoothies can be when I tried this recipe from the blog Your Ill-fitting Overcoat, slightly modified from the cooking site Honest Fare. In the words of blogger Laurie, "This recipe isn't 'good for a green smoothie.' It isn't 'okay except for the spinach.' It is delightful, addictive, ohmygod delicious. It tastes like heaven." I add flaxseed meal to mine.

Here's the recipe:

(Slightly Modified) Honest Fare Green Smoothie

Ingredients:

2 big handfuls of fresh, raw spinach
½ pink lady apple, chopped
1 Tbsp. fresh parsley
1 coin fresh ginger root, minced
1 C. vanilla soy milk
4 strawberries, frozen
½ banana, frozen
½ peach, frozen
¼ C. plain low-fat yogurt (optional)

Blend all ingredients. Serve chilled.

To promote its new Fruit & Veggie Smoothies, Jamba Juice is offering a two-for-$5 deal, which ends on March 30. The coupon, which you can download here, is good for any 16-ounce smoothie, Hot Blend or Ideal Meal.

Jamba Juice is almost on the right track..but not quite, what they have does not constitute as a real Green smoothie... :( -unfortunately
