Eat Here, Not There: Battered Potatoes

Ever eaten at Shakey's? Did you get the Mojo Potatoes?

Don't lie. We know you did. Everyone does, even though people are mostly drawn to Shakey's for the artisanal, hand-tossed pizza. (That was sarcasm.)

If you've never had Mojo Potatoes, they're basically battered, deep-fried potato rounds. They're served with ranch dressing, and they really are the only reason to go to Shakey's.

That's why I was happy to discover the fried potatoes at Pizza Boy in Anaheim. They're not quite the same as Mojo Potatoes--they remind me more of the Australian battered potatoes from the Orange County Fair, mostly due to the wedge shape--but they're still very good, and the pizza at Pizza Boy is far better than at Shakey's.

I just can't stand their pizza. It's greasy and unnecessarily bready... meh.

I do like the Mojo Potatoes, it's just they don't make a meal and it's not like I'm going to go to Shakey's and order Mojo Potatoes and a salad or something.

Dude, have you ever tried Shakey's Mojo Supreme? It's filling enough to be a meal, but we usually get it as a starter with a thin crust pepperoni pizza. It's nachos but with Mojo potatoes. Awesome!

Honestly I can't even remember the last time I went to a Shakey's we usually order Round Table for delivery. But that is because Orange is a desolate wasteland when it comes to pizza and also because my wife seems to hate any pizza I enjoy.

Dude, have you ever tried Shakey's Mojo Supreme pizza? Think Mojos plus pizza all in one meal. You should try it. That said, ain't nothing wrong with Mojos and a salad...I get that combo all the time.

Disagree friend. Shakey's Mojos are mad good. If you're gonna do it - fried and battered, better be worth it and Shakey's is the place. Delicately seasoned and fried to perfection. As for their pizza, the original thin crust will hold up to any artisan pie.
