New Okinawan Restaurant Replaces Teriyaki Bowl Joint in Tustin

Teriyami, the teriyaki joint that Gustavo reviewed last March and featured in our 100 Favorite Dishes, is no more. A new restaurant called Habuya has moved in. This time, the featured food is Okinawa-style Japanese. A sampling of dishes includes omelets with Japanese bitter melon and eel and egg rolls filled with papaya and pork.

The location is still the most awkward in a well-worn Stater Bros.-anchored plaza--tiny, tucked away and blocked from view. Before Habuya and Teriyami, it has hosted a slew of other failed Asian restaurants. There was Yehjin, a Korean restaurant, and, before that, Mimi, Minami and others I've already long forgotten.

At least now the decaying "Grand Opening" banner outside Teriyami has finally been taken down. Good luck to Habuya. Let's hope I'm not writing about it in the same way come next year.

Thanks to tipster Johan Moreno for the news.

This small, cozy bistro has phenomenal food from sauteed pork with kimchee to salmon carpaccio. We know the chef from his days in Laguna Beach, and he could cook anywhere. They serve small plates so it makes it possible to try everything.-- Jane & Charlie

Habuya offers great Okinawan food, prices are very reasonable, and there are many delicious dishes. The owner is well respected and active in the Japanese community in Southern California. It is very cozy and offers very health food.. Perhaps, read about Habuya on YELP?

Edwin, I wish you would actually try the food and write about it at these places instead of just telling us they are new and just giving us a heads up.

There's a difference between news posts and mini-reviews, Diamond Dog. The fact that a place has opened is usually newsworthy (unless it's like a Subway, in which case the only people who really gives a damn are Nancy Luna and the guy they hire to wave the sign out front).

Eventually one of us will get there and I'm sure it'll get written up. I actually went today to try it and they're closed Mondays, so I ended up eating at Peter's Gourmade Grill instead.

Also, with Teriyami gone, Umami is now the best teriyaki in OC...

And I wish you would actually take your own advice, but that's neither here nor there...

Do you mean like your chopstick article? All about food. or how about the Taco Bell reoccurring travesty of journalism?

Oh my God, that sounds INCREDIBLE. I will be there with bells on!
