The Real 'Bud' Light? New Marijuana Soda Launches in Colorado Next Month and Possibly in California in the Spring

Categories: Really?!?!?
One-upping adult chocolate milk and whipped cream is a new line of "soda pot"--that is, marijuana-laced soda.

Because, really, who has time to make brownies these days?

Diavolo Brands, a marketing company based in Soquel, California, will roll out the beverages at medical-marijuana dispensaries in cannabis-friendly Colorado next month and has tentative plans to bring them to California in the spring, reports the Santa Cruz Sentinel. The five flavors include the flagship Canna Cola, the Dr Pepper-like Doc Weed, the lemon-lime Sour Diesel, the grape-flavored Grape Ape and the orange-flavored Orange Kush.

Marijuana soda isn't new in Colorado. Our sister paper Westword even taste-tested Keef Cola and Dixie Elixers, a couple of the latest mass-produced lines.

Containing 35
milligrams to 65 milligrams of THC, Canna Cola is substantially less potent than others on the market, Diavolo Brands founder Scott Riddell told the Sentinel. He compared the product to a "light beer" alongside high-proof liquors.

What makes it different is its savvy branding. "You look at all the marijuana products out there, and they are so mom-and-pop, hippie-dippy and rinky-dink," Riddell said. Canna Cola labels, blaring yet clean, would fit in with the multitude of bottled sodas on grocery-store shelves.

But don't have your happy snacks on standby just yet.
The "Brownie Law," a bill in Congress sponsored by Senator Dianne Feinstein, passed the Senate last year. It would increase penalties for makers of products that combine marijuana with "a candy product."

Intrigued & ANGRY!
Intrigued & ANGRY! to me about the "Brownie Law.".. Feinstein just lost my vote after being a supporter my entire life (I'm 32) & have been a supporter since about 5th grade. Shame on her! - there are SOOOOOO many people who can benefit from THC that can't/don't want to/etc. SMOKE. Who (all) is lobbying her?!.. the candie/etc. companies, pharmeceuticals (trying to keep marijuana illegal), both (and possible/probably more).

As I, and many others, noted when this story was on Gawker, there have been THC-enhanced sodas in dispensaries for a long, long time. Not only in California, but people in Colorado concurred. What's funny is the crux of the story is not that they are something new, but that he's going to market them better. Or something. It's tough to say what he's talking about, because the way in which he describes the competitors, the "mom and pop" and "hippy dippy" thc sodas, makes me think he's not only never tasted his own product, but never actually looked at it either. I mean, those bottles up there aren't that different from what I could have already bought. I will, however, give him credit for not doing any horrible, pot related puns.

Which seems to further suggest that the entire line is a marketing ploy in the Four Lokos or Scottish Spirits vein – but is Mr. Butler, just a bit too intoxicated on, well, whatever it is that gets him going?
