Girl Scout Cookies Shrinking, Disappearing Due to the Economy

If Dulce de Leche, Thank U Berry Much or All Abouts are some of your favorite cookie flavors, better accept the reality now: The Girl Scouts are no longer offering these in their lineup. But wait, there's more!
The Girl Scouts announced earlier this week that both the size and quantity of some remaining flavors will also dwindle slightly--as of now, only the Lemon Chalet Cremes are reducing in size, while the downsized quantities include Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Shortbread Cookies, DoSiDos and Trefoils (up to four fewer cookies per box).

The reasons behind these changes? A rise in both transportation and baking costs. As a result, the agreed-upon course of action was to "lower the net weight of our cookie boxes slightly rather than ask our customers to pay a higher per-package price during these difficult times," Girl Scouts spokesperson Michelle Tompkins told CNN.

This Forker is pretty indifferent to Girl Scout cookies, but I can only imagine the thoughts of my friend who stockpiles Thin Mints annually in her freezer. . . .

Hey do not mess with my girl scout cookies, I wait year long for them. Yeah sure we can get some store brand cookies but the reason people should buy them is to help a bunch of kids out. We are losing too programs that open the minds of our children. Do want to stop crime and gangs? Well start doing stuff for Our kids. That is where we need to start. Give them things to do that are healthy, fun and not just hanging out the park after school. Come on wait til you have kids and find out there just is not much for them to do any more. Where can you go ride a dirt bike any more? All the after school programs We had when I was kid kept me out of trouble, now they are gone. Shut buy as many cookies as they have and know it was for a hood cause and they taste great.

Girl Scout Cookie peddling is for parents who want to create the illusion that their offspring are providing a valuable service to society.

Similar cookies in the market are not the exact same cookies. I get why people are particular about the Girl Scout brand. It's also possibly that people really like supporting kids in uniforms. When I was a boy scout we sold christmas trees and wreaths, popcorn, nuts, candy bars, and other random stuff. We never had the hegemony that the girls in brown and green had for fundraising.

On another note, Diamond Dog, why do you keep hammering the point? It's a food blog. Not an OC restaurant review blog or a recipe blog. SAFII has always been about anything tangentally food related. Guess what? Ethnicity, politics, economics, the environment et al are all essential aspects of food culture. It's gonna come up no matter how much you voice your displeasure. Articles without comments doesn't mean people haven't clicked the link. Eyeballs and clicks most likely rank further than your dispirited remarks. Whenever I notice an article has new comments I check it again. Guess what? Your negative comments draws more traffic to the articles you disapprove of than if you were to say nothing, thus enticing more similar blogposts.

To wrap this up DD, as a regular reading of SAFII, I enjoy seeing your displeasure on a daily basis. I know you are not a stereotyped OC food eater, voting for PF Changs and Javiers et al, based on your comments and blog. But you seem to take it personally when any post doesn't fit into your narrow expectations that I want to repeat Gustavo's point from another comments section: start up your blog again!

Well, at least I can still get my beloved Do-Si-Dos... Oatmeal/Peanut butter cookies seem kind of old school, but hey, I can run like that.

Girl scout cookie sales are the main way for local girl scout troops to raise money for their activities. Contrary to your jaded, cynical and ignorant comment, there are many girl scouts and troops of ALL different economic backgrounds and ethnic makeups who benefit from the great programs that the girl scout organization offers to its scouts, particularly the OC GS Council. Girl scout cookie sales are about fund-raising for the kids - something that just about anyone who has actual kids in school is well acquainted with at many different levels. (From a GS dad),

"elasticities" should be ethnicities in my last post. Funny auto correct...

Pat,

I will continue to point out whatever comes to mind in this blog. You fail to mention all the positive comments I leave for many of the pieces. I will call a spade a spade. Politics have very little to do with food and only do if you make it so. There are other elasticities besides the Mexicans and there is a way to talk about all the thigns you listed without stirring up controversy. There are other sections in the OC Weekly that address these things and if you notice, I seldom go there or comment there.

I have never told you to stop commenting, regardless of my opinion of your comments. Why do you do so?

I was excited about Ann Marie joining the staff. She was positioned as one who has insight to new restaurants, especially openings and such. I was looking forward to this vs the recent articles that just tell you a restaurant is opening or opened with nothing much more to say. And this is her first article????!!!!

If there isn't that much to say, why not just not say anything instead of republishing what other real journalists already publish.

I have Google News as my homepage and suggest you get that. You can even set it to give you OC News. This way you can get all of the non food news and even food news every day. Look at the Register's Blog. They don't put up tons of write ups, but the ones they have been putting up are really good, unique and have the writers experiences and unique perspectives. Its real writing lately. On top of that, look how Jeff treats his readers. Even the hostile ones. He truly is trying to build more interaction, vs the assclown that heads up this blog with his one sentence insults and name calling to his readers. He will tell you he is a great "writer". Then respond with with in depth "writing" to his readers with comments like "whine whine whine...Go start your own food blog"

Being in the industry, I have a subscription to Restaurant News. Get a subscription. I can get one for you. They are great for interpreting raw data and drawing conclusions without digging deeper. So its lame to re read the same stuff and have the OC Weekly writers that use it try and make themselves out to be informed, educated, or news breaking. It's pretty close to plagiarism. .OC is so diverse and pretty big as far as food venues, so there is no excuse to not explore it and write about more with this large staff!.

So you can get mad at they guy who points it out, or you can get mad at the people doing it. Your choice. It probably won't change a thing either way, but its a free country and people can express themselves, right?

Look at 2 great writers on this site. Shuji & Dave. Not every write up is a hit, but most are. And even within the write ups that don't hit the mark, you can see that they TRIED. They put in an effort. They are true journalists that put themselves out there. They tried to be creative, think of something, and not just regurgitate some one else's work. This is why they are the Gold Standard of this organization.

As far as drawing more readers to the write up I dislike, awesome. It's great to know I am so powerful in this world. I am not for OC Weekly's Food Blog going out of business, I am for new leadership. Someone like Dave to take it over and take it in a new direction. A more positive polished direction. A direction where there is more reader involvement and interaction. I have a dream.

I hear you Pat, you shouldn't limit this blog to only OC restaurants and openings and such. but look at the week's recap. It was heavily weighted on regurgitated articles and non relevant topics. I even enjoyed and commented on a couple of them (like the monkey one). But its just going too far and they need to reel it in. My opinion. So what?

As far as restarting my own blog again, I don't understand how that is relevant to improving this blog?

I appreciate your comments, Pat, and I am glad you are a regular commentator on this blog.

Because people in Orange County buy Girl Scout cookies? Why does everything have to be just OC specific? Sometimes it's nice just to get an OC perspective on "national" food news.
