Porto's in Downey Has Opened! Today!

• Welcome Downey Porto's. I have been waiting for along time to have this closer to home. I bring my out of town guests to the one in Glendale. Love it! Love it! LOVE IT!

• All I can say is....IT'S ABOUT TIME! I am so happy to have a Porto's close to home. Although I didn't mind making the drive to Glendale every few weeks.

• I'm not a fan of the Glendale location and will be interested to see how the substantial Cuban community in Downey reacts to this allegedly Cuban bakery. Maybe they'll make Porto's sing until they get it right.

• Tropicana on Paramount South of Florence has some great pastries and sandwiches. They also have a small sit down restaurant. Habana Cafe is a big restaurant with a bakery in the front and they used to have a nightclub in the back. Their food is good, but haven't tasted their desserts. There is also a kind of fast food restaurant called Tropical on Lakewood North of Florence. I've ordered a few things to go. It's not bad for a quick fix, but it's more of a burger stand that serves Cuban food too. Porto's will be the big daddy however as their new location looks to be very big. Seems to be a two story building. I live in the area and can't wait. They were supposed to open back in May.

• @Dave My tipster tells me there's also a place called Habana Cafe in Downey with a bakery area and a few tables. So maybe even a three-way duel might be warranted!

• Yes!!! I work near a Cuban cafe that buys parbaked Porto's pastries like Contigo used to, and they manage to fuck them up because their can't be bothered to set their oven hot enough to properly puff the puff pastry. I can't wait to have a real Porto's closer to home staffed by their own bakers.

• I wonder if we could get away with a dueling dishes between Porto's and Tropicana, both in Downey. Too far out of OC?
