#50. Bun Rieu at Kim Huong
Before I wax poetic on bun rieu, the "other" Vietnamese noodle soup that most people have yet to discover, I have to tell you that it won't be the last time that you'll see the dish on this list. I have at least one more to share with y'all.
But what I love about Kim Huong's version is that it just very well might be the cheapest noodle soup in the county. The going rate for the soup you see above is about $3.60 for a to-go order. It's even cheaper if you decide to eat in (about 50 cents less)
This is the reason this soup has become part of my take-out routine. Their number is on speed dial, and when I call they usually know who I am, what I want, and that I'll be there to pick it up in ten minutes.
The soup is wondrously tomatoey, slightly spicy, and mostly sweet. Actual tomatoes slowly melt into it, softened by the heat of the brew. Floating rafts of fried tofu and compressed, meatloaf-like morsels made from ground pork, crabmeat bound with beaten egg are the proteins. And of course, tangles upon tangles of wispy noodles that dissolves instantly in your mouth.
This isn't pho. Not even close.
If you're salvitating at the picture and that price, better get there before the 6 p.m. closing time. Oh yeah, don't even try them on a Sunday, they're closed.
