Drunk After Work: 7 Seas Fish House

The Place: 7 Seas Fish House, 12941 "Historic" Main St., Garden Grove; (714) 590-2222.

The Hours: 3-6 p.m., every day.

The Deal: $1.50 domestic beer, various well drink specials, 7 apps under $6.

The Scene: A cavernous restaurant in Garden Grove's only walkable district with a huge, imposing wall of liquor. What clientele they have is mostly Asian, with a mixed crowd toward the end of the happy hour.

The Sauce: Decent mixed drinks and a reasonably good well, but most people were drinking beer due to the low price of domestic drafts.

​The Eats: The seven appetizers were, predictably, seafood-heavy--fish and chips, calamari, bacon-wrapped shrimp--and greasy-looking, even for fried food. What drew me into the place was the promise of $1 Blue Point oysters, a half dozen of which were served with a raft of various seasonings, from horseradish to pico de gallo. Blue Points don't have the briny flavor of their better-known Kumamoto cousins, but these were scrupulously fresh. The only issue was that two of the six oysters had been inexpertly balanced on the ice, which caused the liquor (the oyster liquor, thank you very much) to run out.

The Verdict: Go for one drink and a plate of oysters. Insist on ones that have been handled correctly.
