Calimocho: Red Wine & Coca-Cola

Calimocho comes from combining two drinks most Americans would never think to mix: seriously cheap red wine and Coca-Cola.

This concoction originated in Spain and is enjoyed mostly by younger drinkers because it's inexpensive and easy to make.

Head to your nearest Trader Joe's and pick up a bottle of Charles Shaw red wine for $2 (a.k.a. "Two Buck Chuck"). It doesn't matter what variety of wine you choose, just as long as it's red. The only thing left is to buy a 2-liter bottle of Coca-Cola. Mix equal parts red wine and soda into a pitcher and you will have a refreshing drink that is a less-sweet version of sangria. And unlike sangria, calimocho is hard to screw up, so have fun tweaking the recipe to your particular taste. Try changing the ratio of wine to Coca-Cola, or if you're feeling adventurous, swap out the Coca-Cola for other brands of sodas.

There is only one rule when it comes to Calimocho: It is best enjoyed cold, so serve it on the rocks!

I like a little more coke in mine - my ratio borders on 65% coke 35% vino.  What can I say?  I'm a coke fiend.

AWESOME!!! Someone else in Orange County knows about Pays Basque or is Basque. Both Lejias and Kalimotxo are popular drinks there. Kas is also better tasting than Fanta drinks too. I don't think you can find Kas in the states, if so, its a difficult find. Gora Euskadi!!!

Mixing of soft drinks and alcoholic beverages may seem exotic to some, but in Bavaria and Austria, beer and "lemonade", a sort of 7-up without the bubbles, is quite common as a summer drink. And my friend in Zacatecas who now owns a cantina, says one of the most popular requests is a mix of Blanco Madero, a white wine produced in northern Mco, and Squirt.I like 'em both. But the erzatz screwdriver I got in South Munich, 50-50 vodka and orange juice, well I'll stick to the good German bier.

A friend introduced me to "Summer Beer"...it's a mixture of beer, vodka, and pink lemonade! It's very refreshing!

this is actually a Basque drink! This is the national drink of young partiers there.

also the proper spelling is Kalimotxo, pronounced the same way.

another popular drink is beer (pale ale preferably) and Kas, a lemon soda. This drink is sometimes referred to as lejia, meaning bleach because your are bleaching the beer with the soda.
