The dessert at the recently opened Haven Gastropub in Orange ventures into unknown territory--territory that should have been left alone. Candied bacon ice cream?! Yes, you read that correctly: Porky Pig has been turned into ice cream. Although the first bite did not taste like bacon, the second bite was, well, unsettling. I had discovered the bacon chunks, and there was no going back.
Upon ordering, our server claimed that everyone who orders the bacon ice cream loves it. Lies! The sweet and salty flavor of the ice cream is not bad, but it's those chunks! Without them, the ice cream tastes like caramel. Now, the chocolate brownie the ice cream is served on top of is delicious. It has a thick crust like that of a pie. Despite the fact I never want this dessert again, it is still something you have to try once because the idea of it is just so ridiculous.
After experiencing candied bacon ice cream, it was time for a more surefire dessert: the Irish Car Bomb. Consisting of a mini Irish cream chocolate cake, a scoop of Guinness ice cream, and Jameson caramel sauce, this backup dessert was ultimately satisfying, although a bit too sweet. The best part is that it has all of the alcoholic flavors of the cocktail of the same name, minus the hangover.
The ideal Haven Gastropub dessert? Take a scoop of the Guinness ice cream and put it on the brownie found with the candied bacon ice cream. That would be the winning combination.
