Dave Segal moved into Detroit Bar on both Friday and Saturday nights: "Free the Robots' thrilling [Friday] live show blew away Afrika Bambaataa's moldy DJ set. Local upstarts overshadowed a legend!" And on Sat, "DJs Josh One, Hyder, James Pants and Peanut Butter Wolf spun loads of great hip-hop cuts and freaky dance tracks that didn't fit neatly into any categories."
Saturday took our interns Patrick Chavis and Nate Jackson to Cal State Long Beach for the Ludacris concert/protest and the Costa Mesa Fairgrounds for Kat Von D's MusInk Tattoo and Music Festival, respectively. Patrick chatted protesters up in the rain while Nate ogled the heavily-inked and scantily clad, then caught the Tiger Army performance at the concert hall on the premises. Photographer Christopher Victorio dropped in on MusInk on all three days and will shoot us tons of snaps later today.
Also on Saturday: CV shot Billy Joel at the Honda Center while Reid Sheldon took in The Henry Clay People at The Prospector in Long Beach. He writes: "Some might have been disappointed with a set of mostly covers (there were one or two others in there that I can't remember right now), but really I found myself more than satisfied. They played my two favorite originals as well as a brand new song from their forthcoming full length album that will be out later this month. They came, they drank, they rocked, and I hope someone sober drove them home (probably one of the nice girls selling their merch)." Read the rest of Reid's review here.
Elsewhere, LYT rediscovered the wonders of Wal-Mart, where he bought shelves, "the three-disc director's cut of HELLBOY for $9.44, and ear-plugs, for all the leaf-blowers and lawnmowers in Santa Ana. Dental floss too. Wal-Mart's pretty cool sometimes."
On Sunday, food blogger Edwin Goei reviewed Pho Ha Noi, which took the place of the pricier Saigon Grille in Irvine. Check back next Sun. for Edwin's take on a certain hot dog stand that's set up in front of the REI Sporting Goods Store in Santa Ana on the weekends.
Christopher visited Huntington Beach High School for the OCTO (Orange County Transporter Organization) Winter Meet, which featured scores of cute but rusty Volkswagen buses. Later in the night, he dropped in on the last leg of the DJ wars at OC Weekly's Spin City event at Sutra, where Irvine boy DJ Dizzy won the right to take his scratching skills to Miami. Again, photos to come.
Last but never least, Gustavo Arellano appeared on Inside OC with Rick Reiff with OC Register reporter Norberto Santana, Jr. on Sunday. (Santana joined G. at Jason's for his usual Corsican calamari and Bloody Mary Friday.) Tune in to KOCE on Wednesday if you missed the show.

Dj Dizzy's set at Sutra last night was weak. The first 5 minutes of his set... he successfully train wrecked 2 times. Nice light show you pansy. Spin City is sending you to Miami to represent OC? They should be sending a REAL Dj. You wont have your Crew representing in Miami when you get laughed off stage.

My first time in OC and I felt like I was in a really really cheesy, rigged reality show.
If it wasn't for Dizzy's "friends" wearing "DJ Dizzy" T-shirts; the MC CHANTING "DJ DIZZY!!" over and over again - the host had his nose all over the Dizzy's behind- and the MC actually asked "Who do you want for president?"(I puked a little bit in my mouth), and Dizzy's ridiculous glow in the dark war make up etc, etc... it would have been just a sad performance. With all these embellishments it was SAD and PATHETIC.

Did I read that right... "... won the right to take his scratching skills to Miami"???? I might have messed up my hearing from the compressed air show he had going , but I for sure DID NOT hear Dizzy scratching. Scratching a certain body part, probably, but if you're talking about the scratching that's pertinent to the context, then no. Next time, how about making it a little less obvious that the contest is rigged? It would be more fun if it was actually based on TALENT.

Wow...that had to be the most rigged up competition I've ever seen. Funny how the article mention he had scratching skills because he didn't display any. Besides dancing on a speaker Dizzy had no more skill than the person he brought pushing the lights and compressed air. Big shout out to the MC as well "so how much did you get?". "DJ to DJ..." if you thought that was real skill for a DJ then you must be really WACK!! I give it to Dizzy that he brought a lot a people but I thought this competition was based on skills not the # of tickets you can sell. Shame on the judges for actually voting for that fool, anyone that wants to see a real scratching and mixing competition were creativity won’t go unnoticed go DMC-affiliated events. Props to the other DJs that that were bamboozled: Sonik I digged that live performance with your track. Kwest for actually being creative and doing a different sounding set. To probably the real winner, Peter G you both rocked the mic while rocking the tables so CONGRATS TO YOU!!! And to the people that made this possible, the OC Weekly, Acropolis, and anyone affiliated setting this up…Thanks for nothing!

DJ Dizzy was SICK! I don't know why anyone was hating, it was the sickest show I have seen in awhile!!!
February 26, 2008 14:37
Hey Yo! I'm curious to know what other DJ you've seen perform to say that was such a sick show? BTW It's supposed to be a contest not a show...I give Dizzy an 8 in dancing, a 2 in mixing, and deservingly so a 15 with that jacket.
February 28, 2008 17:07
If they hate then let em' hate and watch the money pile up.
March 8, 2008 11:15
Watching money pile up still doesn't speak for lack of skills...

I don't know what any of you guys are talking about, DJ dizzy was the best DJ that night. don't get me wrong, the other dj's were pretty good too, for example sonik.. but It's not all about "skratching", it's about keeping the audience excited and putting on a good show, which dizzy did for sure. you people are talking about how the show was rigged? and his friends? yea all the dj's had friends there.. so what? personally i'm not one of dj dizzy's friends and i went there for another friend of mine sonik, which dont' get me wrong is a great dj... but hey, people liked dizzy more. so get over it if u friend didn't win because mine didn't win either and stop hating on a great dj.

When something is called a dj BATTLE they do not mean who can bring the most people and who can put on the best show. A REAL DJ BATTLE is based purely on SKILLS and not how many people you brought to the event, and to the person who said Peter G should have won is an idiot, Peter may have mic rocking skills but his turntable skills are basic at best. There are not too many real tablist out in OC but a few awesome dj's that I can think of off the top of my head are Boogi, Bandoma (who were both in the contest and are great turntablist), Steve Dub (who has some amazing scratches and can rock the crowd), those are all I can think of right now but any of those guys should have taken this fool out. Maybe next year they should have some real judges that actually know a thing or two about the art of spinning music.
